If there is rain before you start or rain predicted to come in do you still play?

Given the forecast I cancelled early.

I was checking the booking sheet to see if it was worthwhile to go in for a coffee and a chat this afternoon and saw that loads of the morning players had cancelled including every single one of our group.

Depends on a few things...

If it's a comp or a prepaid round then I'll play but won't think too many times about walking in.
If it's a social with CVG or Fragger then it will depend on how heavy the rain is meant to be and how windy.
If there's a likelihood that I'm going to enjoy some of it then I'll play.
I play for enjoyment these days...I don't generally, enjoy drowning and dealing with the masses of wet kit afterwards.
H4H at West Surrey was a prime example...we started on the 7th, got to the 18th and called it a day because it wasn't fun...

Why wouldn’t you get your waterproofs on, your brollie up and get out there.
Besides I couldn’t stand the ridicule from the other chaps for not turning up.
I used to play on weekends with a regular group of 4 (not always the same four). If it was raining, one member of the group would always phone in the morning to see if I was going. My wife and I joked about this and she would always say that I had already left, whether I had or not. Based on that, he would always show up. :)

Only if I have to - i.e. if it is a comp or a match or not to play would let someone down. I don’t enjoy playing in the rain so why else would I?

I just have done today, so yes! If I don't play then the wife will drag me around the shops with her, no doubt, so it's worth getting out there no matter what. 😁

I kid, but really my golf addition is that strong that I couldn't face a weekend without it. Looking forward to golf is what gets me through the working week. Sad as that sounds. I would rather play in the peeing rain than miss out altogether.

The only weather I would strongly consider not playing in is 40mph+ winds, because my game suffers greatly in that, I find it very difficult to hit sensible golf shots in a hurricane. But rain doesn't bother me - I have the umbrella up on my trolley, I have decent waterproof gear so might as well get use out of it.

The main reason I do not play in the rain is because I use a single seat uncovered buggy.

It is virtually impossible to keep your hands dry (I have tried water proof gloves etc).

Very difficult to stop water getting in to the bag when getting clubs out. Waterproof bag covers are designed for bags that are inclined not ones that stand straight up. No point having an umbrella as it just gets in the way when you try to steer the buggy and the umbrella holders stop you from getting clubs out of the bag.

In summer I'll try my best to get out, especially as I'm only getting one round in a week at the moment, but now the temperature's dropped off (it had been mild up until a few days ago) it's not worth it and chances are any precipitation we get now will be snow.

Unless absolutely chucking it down then doesn’t bother me at all.
Still would rather be on the course in a bit of rain than doing most other things in life

Since I retired my propensity to play in the rain has plummeted! Saturday morning used to be the only opportunity to play, so if it was wet, played anyway.

Now, if it's pouring down all day, I won't bother. Today the forecast in N Devon was mixed. Out we went and risked it. It rained for 3 holes, but quite decent for the rest.

Nope.
Only possible exceptions are if I'm on a pre-booked trip somewhere, or a significant comp.
There's enough dry days in East Herts every year for me to get in as much golf as I like without splashing about.

If it’s light rain I have no issue with. It. Competition or a prepaid green fee somewhere again water proofs on and out I’ll go. We’ve a round booked tomorrow and forecast shows light rain for first few holes so Mrs M will get her first round of rain golf with me.

BUT if it’s biblical or like it was this afternoon absolutely not. I love playing but if you can avoid being soaked through to the bone then I’d call it a day and head to range which is what we did this afternoon.
