Do you find par 3s, par 4s or par 5s easiest?

Hi all, some of you may have noticed I have recently come out of hibernation, I think the unseasonably mild weather has woken me up.

Carrying on from Captainrons’s thread regarding par 3 stroke allocation, which type of hole do you find it easier to make par on? A par 3, par 4 or par 5?

My muni has 3 par 3s each nine, some a little intimidating and some straightforward making it a par of 68. But I invariably score better to par on other courses where the course has less par 3s but has more par 4s and 5s so with a slightly wayward tee shot I get closer to the green with my second for a chip and putt par.

Anybody else made similar observations of their scoring?

Par 5s are easier for me on our course. The par 5s are all well within range for me in 3 with the third shot being a full wedge or less. My biggest problem is the par 4s as there are 3 that I can struggle to reach in 2. I have good days and bad days on the par 3s.

Par 5's all day long.

Easy to throw in one (possibly even 2 on some) bad shots and still get a par without working too hard.

In theory I play every hole on its merits and sometimes its easier to play a brand new course as you tend to give each hole the respect it deserves. On your home course you know each hole so well that you don't always focus 100%. We have a short par 4 (320 yards) and its amazing how many players including many low figure guys find a way to drop a shot. Its a real nothing hole.

I guess for me the par 5's are probably the easiest. I get a shot on three out of the four on my course and can usually get home in three, even if the drive isn't always perfect. We have some very long par 3's (2 x 200+ yards and 3 x 178-186 and only 1 short one of 138 yards). These often play into the wind and are very hard to hit in regulation. Similarly a lot of our par 4's need exact tee shots to have a chance of getting home.

On their day they are all easy especially if I'm swinging well. Other days they are horrid. I don't really know what the stats say I play the best but probably the par 5's I would think

Par 3's for me. All of ours are basically a mid iron (4-7). Hitting these clubs off a tee peg - what's not to like. :)

However, miss the green and they are hard to par. Usually if I play all 4 in level par is usually the basis of a good a round.

Our 2 par 5's are short but quite tricky. Plenty of opportunities to mess up.

Our par 4's all have some potential disaster looming even the 2 under 300 yards.

I would agree that par 5's are the easiest holes. I believe that I can reach almost all par 5's in two shots if I get a good tee shot away. If the tee shot is a bit skewiff then I still have the 3rd to get up to the green. I know I am playing well when I get through the par 3's in par or better.

Par 4's for me.

It should really be par 5's for me as I am a fairly long hitter but the 2 on my course are fairly tough with one bottlenecking just before the green with out of bounds either side. Very intimidating!!

So with a lot of short par 4's I find I par more of them than any other, respectively.

Last year for me there wasn't much in it.

Average score:
Par 3 - 3.41
Par 4 - 4.53
Par 5 - 5.39

I like the par 5's and without seeing my stats I'd say they were by far my best holes, but the trouble is the times when I mess up going for them in 2 outweighs the birdies more than I thought they might.

only Mashie seems to like the par 3s but we all seem to think they should be high stroke index

dont you love it when the 28 handicapper gets 5 points for his birdie when they aren't high indexes?

Stats for 2011.

Par 5 = 5.06 stroke average.
Par 4 = 4.33 stroke average.
Par 3 = 3.26 stroke average.

I thought I was best on the par 3's, and worst on the par 5's.

Par 5's for me, but we only have 2:( Even if you hit one bad shot you can usually recover. Par 3's are the hardest for me and we have 5 of them ! They usually have well protected greens and often are all carry. If you look at the Pro's stats par 3's usually play the hardest for them. Probably as all par 4's these days are a drive and a wedge for them, where as the par 3's are a good medium to longer iron.

Par fives are generally the easiest but at my course they're some of the harder holes as they're all over 500 yards long with some magnetic hazards.

We had our stroke indexes redone based on results posted in comps over a number of months and the par fives ar as follows:
1st, 582 yards, SI 3
7th, 547 yards, SI 6
14th, 515 yards, SI 12
18th, 549 yards, SI 4

Overall on my course I'd say the par fours are my best.

Par 5's for me all day

Our 18th used to be a 476 yard par 4...I never made par once

The tee box got moved backwards about 30 yards, got turned into a par 5...

and I make regular birdies on it...go figure that one!
