• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Do you care about how you look on the course?

Yeah I do care. I try to mix up what styles I wear, and I am always coordinated. The golden rule is to always have your shoes, belt and hat matching colours, the rest (should) take care of itself.

Might sound daft, but I play for fun and having a nice outfit is a part I really enjoy.

Never enjoyed dressing like me grandad, (regret giving all them tank tops to charity now:whistle: ) I'd be much happier in trainers and me monsters of rock T-shirt.
But seeing as i have to comfort is my main criteria, followed by price.
If i cared what i look like i wouldn't play golf.

When I was unemployed I did not have the money for all the nice clothes and bags etc.. I looked like a golf bum, but hell I could play! Now I have the shirts and some tidy trousers and a lovely bag, electric trolley etc... And I can't play ...

I'm also thinking how does someone look like they are in a major? I wear Nike shoes, Nike trousers and the top varies. The likes of Rory/Watney have wore my exact outfit but I don't feel like I dress for a major

I don't always look the part for the range but I'm guessing I must look like a pro entering a major on course...

Or possibly the other way round :)

I've selected my 3 outfits for the weekend. Looking at them now the answer to this question is a resounding no.

When I started it was usually black, grey or tan troo's and a plain polo. Used to think I'd look stupid if I wore bright garish stuff while playing off such a high handicap. Now I frankly don't give a hoot what others think. Don't even care if I clash. Mainly because I am terribly good at looking stupid no matter what I wear :D

Will start off Friday quiet muted. Sat and Sunday are going to be much brighter, probably clash in some way and I'll probably play like crap but I'm going to have fun and I know that the guys playing will probably enjoy taking the urine.

Never has a truer word been written on this forum

Comfort is what matters for me.

Though if I don't feel comfortable in the clubhouse, its probably because of my sartorial scruffiness!

I do care about what i look like yes. But then i care about my appearance in all walks if life and tend to like the smart casual approach as it feels comfortable and doesn't look scruffy. I also like to wear some bright colours and doing so doesn't have to be scruffy like the other week I wore red trousers but offset this with black shoes, hat and polo and i felt smart enough to play golf without being dressed like and old man.

What makes me chuckle is when people feel like they have to pay fortunes for golfing attire to be smart! I've played with guys that have done the typical golfer thing of £40 for a polo, £60 for trousers and whatever they spent on a tank top and they look a bag of crap but because they're wearing golf specific brands it doesn't matter. Id rather spend a 1/4 of the price on my whole outfit from Matalan, Primani or Asda and dress smarter than wear golf specific brands to fit in. The only time i buy golf branded clothes is sports direct or if its bought for me.

What was he wearing that made him look silly? I have some bright shirts and probably what you would call "silly" trousers, not loudmouth silly but silly none the less. However, everyone has a different opinion of "silly" on the golf course.

For the range will wear golf gear as if I was going to play a round, nothing loud but smart golf gear. Would that make me look silly in your eyes?

Practicality and comfort for me.

I mix it up with some of my fell walking gear as its by far better quality than any golf attire, especially in poor weather.

My RAB trousers. Paramo smock. Helly Hanson base and second layers all great when the wetahers a bit iffy..

Ths weather a decent golf polo to keep the sweat off, shorts (trousers last night to keep the horse flies off my legs).

And of course my ADIDAS SAMBA golf shoes to really upset the dinosaurs.;)

He looked silly because it was only the range and he had the whole nine yards on. There were also a lot of expensive brands slapped all over his clothes and it looked a bit like he was flashing his wealth around.

Maybe I'm being harsh on the guy because I prefer more subtle style.

I said looks like he's playing in a major just to emphasise how over dressed I thought he was. It was the huge designer logos all over his clothes too that I thought made him look silly.

Why is it so many of you think there needs to be a link between your handicap and how you dress? I can't understand why at all.

I wear what I want to. Some times smart, some times silly, some times scruffy. Do I care? No. not really. It doesn't affect my golf, I can play badly in anything, and I don't really care what any one else thinks either, except when I get thrown out of the club house due to some idiot who wants to impose their views on what is or is not acceptable, despite not being on the committee.

If some one wants to dress up as Tiger or Ricky Fowler good for them. My 5yr old as a Barcelona shirt with Messi on the back,he loves wearing it when we go to the park for a kick around. bless him.

easiest way is just to change to a lighter/brighter coloured shirt :)

But my local pro told me that a dark coloured shirt will help reduce my fade/slice. He said that bright trousers and a dark shirt help promote a draw while dark trousers and a bright shirt promote a fade. Don't tell me I've been wasting money on lessons with him and he was wrong. He also said that keeping your spare tees in your left pocket helped reduce a fade as it gave extra momentum during the hip turn.

To be honest, with the way I hack it round the course most of the time if someone told me that wearing lipstick and eyeliner would allow me to shoot below my handicap I'd give it a go.

Fortunately my golf wardrobe isn't bursting full of choices yet so the uniform is fairly set, although I do break out the tartan trousers, originally bought for a social golf day, occasionally. You get a few comments, but nothing malicious and after you've tee'd off the first no one says anything more.
