Do I need a 3 wood?

At the mo I play with my trusty Adams RPM driver as my only wood, with Adams A2 3+4 hybrids (as long irons), then onto G10's 5-SW.

Would there be any advantage in having a 3 wood in my bag as well, or would it be replicating the performance of the 3 hybrid?

I use mine on holes where being straight, and in a particular position is a good thing. On the other holes I just lump a driver as far as I can.

The 3 hybrid is supposed to replace a 3 iron. This is a bit of a laugh, as it will go more like a 2 iron, but it is nowhere near a 3 wood.

If you drive pretty straight, then you may not need one, especially if you don't have the skill or confidence to hit a 3 wood off the fairway on par 5s. (this is not the easiest thing in the world).

If I have a bad day with the dog, then this is my 'go to' club off the tee.

Depends on the loft and shaft length, Timbo.

A 4 or 5 wood might be a better option. They're longer than a hybrid so go further even with similar loft. Handy from the fairway for something to give you more distance than the hybrid but more controllability than a 3 wood.

I carry one for those long second shots off the fairway. Have a couple of very long par 5s so need the extra distance.

i would say there is a need for a 3 wood, unless you can use your driver off the fairway. on long par 4's and par 5's they can be invaluable in getting very close or maybe even on the green, increasing chance of par, and maybe even getting a birdie

I use my putter more than any other club (obviously) and then my 3 wood. On the short par 4s, on the long holes (second shot) and even to chip now and again. It was the first "new" club I bought when I took up the game again.
Say no more.

I'd say that either a 3 wood, 4 wood or 1 iron is needed for short par 4s.

But that's for my game where a driver may go too far, I'd be lost without my 904!

Depends on your game, if you are a short hitter maybe you don't need one.
What loft & flex do you have on the driver?

But a 3 wood is a pretty standard club in most peoples bags.

I'm going to go suggest that the shorter hitters need a 3 wood more than the longer boys. If you can really drive near to 250 or more, you won't be needing such a long club to get to the greens. I need my 3 wood on 4 holes (discounting the par 5s) as a 2nd shot just to get near the greens, and hopefully on with a members bounce or summer run. I've given up the tactical lay up.....puts too much pressure on the pitch and I'd rather chip from 10 yds short than a 40-60 yd pitch.

I only said that as one guy I play with is a short hitter & never uses a 3 wood - he merely uses his driver on most par 4/5s and even on some par 3s.

Althought he does probably lack the 2nd shot distance like you say!!
