DMD's

Really, so you would be able to identify every non conforming ball/club just by looking at them.

No I wouldn't, but there are lists so it's black and white, they are either conforming or otherwise, no grey area.

I just can't see any positive aspects of allowing equipment that contains non-conforming features which are able to be used surreptitiously,or even by accident.

We can't carry an extra club and just say we won't use it, as soon as we tee off with 15 clubs we are penalised, Ian Woosnam anybody??? So why be allowed to use devices with non-conforming functions?

Or carry wrenches for adjustable clubs? :)

So as long as it's only an occasional cheat it's ok then especially if it's only a little cheat.

I appear to have stepped into another dimension .

Absolutely not - but to others - well...maybe just a wee cheat ever so rarely - even in a comp or qualifier - doesn't really matter - does it?

Actually we should avoid unnecessarily putting temptation into the path of those who might stray (and that's all of us golfers)

Two positive aspects:
It allows players to use the many commonly owned multi-functional devices which include distance measuring instead of having to buy a dedicated distance measuring only device.

By simplifying, it makes understanding the rule very straightforward for players, referees and committees. Simplicity is to be welcomed - all the more so when you consider the nightmareish complications of what came before. Just getting rid of that flowchart is a positive step forward.

It's not like we've suddenly been allowed to take our mobile phones on the golf course like naughty schoolboys.

We've always been allowed to check a phone on the course, just now you can use it as a dmd.

Anyone wanting to use it 'illegally' in the past could do so just by pretending they're checking emails etc.

I disagree with everything, but hey ho, all part of the fun :D

I find it a little bizarre that some seem to think that because players will be looking at a mobile phone screen for distance information they will suddenly be tempted to cheat. If you know the rules why on earth would you suddenly fire up the compass, altimeter or the spirit level in the middle of a round any more than pulling one out of your bag or looking at a watch that has that functionality? It simply won't happen any more often than players exercising the leather wedge or taking a dodgy drop currently (both of which gains a much better advantage by the way!).

I really don't get the issue.

I can walk a course with a DMD and write copious distances, slopes in notes in a note pad or on a course guide, I can check a weather report on the match day. However all hell will be let loose if the same info is provided in real time electronically.

I don't care two hoots what information you, my competitor, may have you'll still have to swing your own club.

By ignoring technological developments and introducing half hearted rules the 'cheating' spectre is raised; de-regulate then there's no problem.

In all this talk about DMDs, we are missing the main point. Will a moderator please come along and remove that intrusive apostrophe from the thread title.
