Today I scored 35 points and so will probably make buffer. However, that 35 points included 5 blobs...!!

Think I could get a discretionary cut? Does such a thing exist?

Why would you want one? You only got 35 points...

Also, handicap adjustments work on stableford, so can't see any reason to justify a cut

How many times do you hear players saying things like 35 points with 5 blobs - the implication being suggested that it could/should have been 45 points.

The reason I want a cut is because I haven't played in comps for a while, but am playing far better than my handicap currently. I played in the comp this morning solely with the intention of starting the cutting process. Blobs were caused by bad course management brought on by overconfidence which stemmed from the rest of the round.

In essence, Rosecott was spot on. I wondered whether in entering the scores on the computer, the handicap secretary might see that I pretty much made handicap despite 5 blobs and give me a discretionary cut (if such a thing exists). Not sure why that thought is controversial? Never mind.

Don't worry scrindle, I see where you're coming from.... If you'd scored 45 you'd have people calling you a bandit and a cheat and yet you want a cut but aren't justified one... sometimes you just can't win. 😕

No offense, but maybe having 5 blobs means you aren't actually playing better than your handicap?

After all, your handicap is based on how you play throughout the whole course, not just your best holes. Being a bogey golfer (for example) doesn't mean shooting bogey on every hole. It's much more likely gonna be a couple of pars, maybe a lucky birdie and then some bogeys as well as double/triple bogeys.
Now imagine that imaginary HCP 18 player shoot 36 points in a tournament and walk up to the counter demanding a discretionary cut because "if he hadn't played the two triples on 4 and 9, that quadruple bogey on 5 and the quintuple on 16", he would have shot far more points and thus lowered his handicap...

One could also argue that playing good doesn't only mean shooting low scores on your good holes, but also being able to hold your score together on the bad holes so you still make at least one point....

That being said, if you actually play far better than your current handicap, cutting it should be only a question of "when" rather than "if". All the best in the process, and if you want to see the positive side, you gave yourself another great chance of winning the net price in your next tournament... ;)

If it's your 1st card in for a while I won't expect a cut but you never know.
You do have the supplementary card option if comps don't come around quick enough or on unsuitable days

You can't expect a cut when you didn't play to your HC, keep playing comps and the cuts will come eventually

Do Those 5 blobs not mean anything then or did someone else play them for you?

If they were dishing out cuts ignoring bad holes I'd be off about 4, the problem is, it's me that hits the bad shots. If you can't complete 18 holes under handicap, then you don't deserve a cut.
