Been several threads over ecent months on "the rules" etc

Thoughts on different Classes of rules depending on the type / level of comp ?

e.g.
Class 1 event
Pro Tour event / "proper"/board Club Comps / MOnthly Medals
All Rules of Golf apply

Class 2 event
Golf Society events with big prizes
No "Banter"
Can't tell people to "take their time"
Club Matches

Class 3 event
GM Forum meets
Golf society events with bottle of wine/ small golf type prizes
Club Social competitions / Texas Scambles
Can tell people to Take their time
Can give advice by pointing 14 year olds, or people new to the game hints and advice all the way round (as long as they dont win)
Can play out of order

Class 4 event
Anything goes :)

What other Rules would be allowed to be "dropped" in Class 2 and 3 (say)

In drafting this thread, i am expecting a number of "the rules are the rules and if you dont want to play by them dont play", and "its the same for teh pros as for the beginner and so it should be" etc etc
I'm also of the opinion that most of us on here would be happy with Class 3 Rules for most of our social golf, as that's how most people like to play?

This could be a really good thread, or WW3 and the end of civilisation as we know it ...

One set of rules works fine for me. Any proper competition uses 'Rules of Golf'. Anything else is merely 'Social' golf, with or without a competitive element. Texas Scrambles are an example.

Totally against my approach to golf to waive rules - except for mixing matchplay and (stableford) strokeplay in 'bounce' games.

Can you imagine the carnage. How can you choose to ignore some rules etc. This game is already archaic enough without making it more complicated. I get where your coming from but its a big NO from me. Leave as is

Social and Competition are the only 2 types of golf I know. I can't really see the need for further muddying of the water really.

Oh, and stop being so bloody argumentative Sev....:ears:

Just thought it would make a nice argument on here - in reality i like the rules is rules approach to golf, but if i listen to the many threads on here, almost everyone is happy to "not enforce" a whole variety of rules as and when it suits.

Come on, we want an argument - it's the boring mid-week

As I see it, there are 2 types of golf.

Those were you have a card in your hand (or a matchplay K/O) and social golf. If you have a card in your hand then you play strictly by the rules, end of. If you are just having a knockabout with your mates then it's fine to move your ball out of a divot, drop one under penalty if you lose your ball rather than walk back to the tee etc etc.
