Crude Experiment!

I know this isn't exactly rocket science and there are many variable factors, mainly my inconsistent golf swing, wind, bounce etc etc.

Anyway I went to the practice ground today and hit 100 balls with a 7 iron. When collecting them I noticed that my Callaway Hex Black balls were all roughly 3-5 yards further than any others. This got my curiosity going so I decided to conduct my own sad little experiment. I really need to get a life!

I looked out 2 Hex Balcks, 2 Titleist Pro V1, 2 Pro V1x, 2 Z-Stars and one each of a Wilson Staff FG Tour and a Bridgestone B330 rx.

I then got my 8 iron and hit all 10 balls. The 8 iron produced the same results when I went to collect the balls, the Hex Blacks were 5 yards further than the ProV1x and the Z-STAR with the Wilson Staff being the poor relation about 10yards behind the Callaway.

Off I trotted again and grabbed a 5 iron and again the Callaway was 3-5 yards ahead of the ProV1x and the Z-Star. Wilson again last place by over 10 yards! Finally I launched into a 3 wood off the deck. Despite hitting a horror with a Pro V1 the results were the same with the Callaway Hex Black being slightly longer than the ProV1x!

The main thing I took from this was don't use a FG Tour as you'll be playing a club longer for your second shot!

Almost as sad a post as Dodger talking about flag colours!

Cabin fever is defo setting in.............we need some sunshine

Anyway............back to Craws Balls
Ive played most of the Callaway premium offerings since starting playing, from rule 35, to latest Hex Black, and always liked, I do like most of the Bridgestone range too
BUT Prefer NOT to play ProV1, as for me too, it plays short, (will be me ) probs overspinning.......??

BTW .............. Hit any Dugs today mate...............

I found the hex balls long too, kept overshooting the green and losing the blooming things,
Especially hitting with the wind
They ain't cheap either

Prefer Bridgestone E6 balls now

Thankfully an animal free zone today!

It was actually quite a nice day once I got warmed up.

so in conclusion the hex technology works and fg tours are softer than prov

FG Tours are soft in my opinion. Great ball off the putter face but from today's crude experiment/bit of fun I won't be using them.

please put this same 10 balls aside and try and reproduce this test on a warm day in May.

such 'tests' do have a value, and I have certainly noticed that there seems to be a bigger differential in ball 'performance' in these cold conditions than I notice the rest of the year off mid irons. Can't comment on the FG Tour specifically as I don't think I have had one in the bag when practicing.

I switched from Pro-V to Callaway about a year ago. Titliest had brought their new version out and it just felt harder to me, especially for those little chips and pitches. Distance, for me, there wasn't too much in it but around the green it was the Callaway for me.

Also, whenever I hit a Callaway, dugs sit by the side of the fairway without fear...;)

I hate Hex balls. Too hard off the putter in particular for my preference. Interesting results though. Would have been interested to see the Penta in there. At least you hit some balls. Went to two ranges today. One had so much snow and ice on the mats it would have been lethal. The other had heavy flurries blowing straight into the bay and really didn't fancy it

In the tundra of Renfrewshire it can be as cold in May as it is today!

The pro who I get lessons off said to me that Callaway have but 10x more dosh into their ball research and production than in their clubs. In any independent test the hex out performs any other ball.
All they needed to do was just ask you to do it :)

Did you know what balls you were hitting when you were hitting them?

Have to agree that I've also found the Hex Tours to be longer. I think it's probably down to the dimple pattern causing less drag. From reading your previous posts Craw I imagine you've got a swift swing speed so I wonder whether you'd get more distance from the Bridgestone B330-S/330 as it's a firmer ball than the RX. Especially as you hit the ProV1x longer than the ProV

Maybe worth you trying the FG tour x. Works better for quicker swing speeds and no noticeable loss of distance.

Since I've switched to the FG Tour ball I've noticed boa loss of distance at all but found I actually hit the X version longer than a pro v and no difference in distance to a Z Star. I will admit the callaway ball is about 5 yards longer when I've tried it but I'd say they can keep that 5 yards as it feels like chipping and putting with a pebble in comparison to the FG Tour ball.

Guess it just shows with all things golf ball related its got to be down to personal preference.

I've actually got quite a smooth swing, roughly 100ish mph. I would choose the RX out of all the Bridgestone B330 range. The ProV1x surprised me this year when I tried them. It seemed to react better on the greens than the ProV1.

I am a big fan of the callaway hex. to say they are rocks is down to personal preference imho, how the hell any handicap golfer can tell the difference means they are either a) a machine with minute feel resistors in their clubs and hands or b) brand tarts who are looking for a flaw before they even hit it

Love my Hex blacks. Got a box for xmas and saw an instant improvement.

I will be trying the chrome version soon as it's meant to suit my slow swing speed.
