Balls

Played with it today, still couldn't find any negatives. Apparently, sold out in the US... still available for us :)
I’m intrigued. What did feel like as an all round ball across different shots and around the greens.

Any noticeable loss of distance other than what you would normally get this time of year with the cooler air. ?

Didn’t see any noticeable differences across any shots. Subjectively, similar distance, feel, trajectory, stopping etc. I’m sure there is difference if all of these were measured scientifically but at £17 per dozen I had no complaints. Your mileage may differ 🙃

That’s good to hear, I probably won’t give it a go as I like what I’m using as and get it for a very good price.

But I’m a big advocate of playing golf for the best possible budget/VFM and there are more brands entering the DTC market making golf more affordable across the board and I’m always interested in seeing how cheaper brands perform.

Just to give some data-based context - Ian Fraser’s review comparing to ProV1: higher launch, lower spin, lower speed (driver) = same carry!

Seen quite a few reviews of various you tube Pro’s comparing Amazon call to ProV1 and Kirkland. I think these comparison reviews are a little false economy when they try and do as like for like because it’s obvious there’ll be a lot of difference between a 2 piece and 3 piece ball, James Robinson review was terrible saying how bad the ball is, of course it is because he plays to a higher level so doesn’t get what’s required from it. . Better comparisons in that regard would be 2 piece vs piece.

The real value in this kind of review for the average amateur is showing they often don’t need a 3 piece premium ball which I’ve said for years as they often don’t reap the full benefit and wouldn’t see a difference switching to a softer 2 piece. Especially with slower swing speeds as they’ll be able to compress the softer ball better maximising their distance and control. But was an interesting watch 👌

I think most of the robot testing lately has the softer two piece balls costing distance even at lower swing speeds. I think the biggest trade off is cost, is it worth spending more on a ball to gain ~ 5-10 yards off the tee?

One could easily replace "ball" in this with many golf products. :)

Simple answer should be yes absolutely because 5-10 Yards in the grand scheme of things is absolutely nothing. But we all know the modern golfer is obsessed with distance and will pay hundreds for a driver to go a couple of yards further.

Pretty much all golf equipment except a putter you could put in that category. But people are obsessed with distance these days.

In Ian’s review the point was that whatever was lost in ball speed was made up for in higher launch and lower spin, therefore there was no loss of distance.

I thought much of the difference between cheaper and more expensive balls was in the coating. The more expensive Urethane coat allows for better control on shorter shots which can benefit golfers of many different swing speeds.

I’ve been meaning to start a balls thread for a while, and so as suggested on the bargains thread, here we are.

Personally, I’ve been using the prov1x for the last year or so, mainly because a club fitter recommended it. I do like them, I like the feel, distance and the spin I get. However, I don’t like the price!

With that in mind I’ve been trying to wade through the mygolfspy ball test, and have taken a punt on srixon zstar xv. From what I can gather they give good distance and spin. £30 for a dozen on eBay, will see what happens!

Reading the bargains thread I’m kind of wishing I’d tried the Wilson triad now. Although the way I’m playing I’ll probably need to buy some more balls soon anyway!

Seed SD-01 is as close to a pro-v1 that I’ve found and they are very well priced. Having used them for well over a year now, there is one thing making me swap back to the pro-v1 next year. consistency around the greens. They just roll out too much and I’m finding I’m wanting more grab on the short sided shots.

I think it was those I was using for a while and I did like them. Only think I didn’t like was having to buy in bulk to avoid postage. I’m playing the Wilson staff model x at the moment and really liking them.

Not wanting to call an influencer a fibber - but when did Calvin Klein start using the same discount stickers as Sports Direct? :ROFLMAO:
Sports Direct sell CK clothing. If they are going to sell golf balls, they do have a golf clothing range, it's logical to use them to be the outlet.

Beat me to it I was about to say he’s chatting absolute 💩 because that’s sports direct sticker and they’ve had them balls in there for months 🤣

Noticed a lot of his recent content is absolutely terrible, it’s like he’s running out of ideas for content so is resorting to click bait. He’s better of sticking to his challenges and reviews of actual kit.

Yeah, bit of creative language as he clearly found them in Fat Mike's Emporium.

To be fair I’ve got a couple of the CK midlayers they’re really good quality and value for golf. Imagine the balls must be terrible though 🤣
I have several bits of CK Golf clothing (mostly from County-Golf) and they're all good quality. Making balls seems like a bridge too far though.
