Crude Experiment!

I am a big fan of the callaway hex. to say they are rocks is down to personal preference imho, how the hell any handicap golfer can tell the difference means they are either a) a machine with minute feel resistors in their clubs and hands or b) brand tarts who are looking for a flaw before they even hit it

Given that I play prov1, z star, 330rx, or my current favourite penta, I'm not sure how I can be brand biased. I have some Nike 20xi x which are like rocks, but I picked them for a reason, as I wanted something a bit hard for a specific event.

I have never yet found a soft cally ball. Just haven't. I have a forged putter, no insert, and cally balls just ping off it, and sound clicky, they just do. No mystery to it. I've tried them all, and they are clicky. Like the nikes. I don't like clicky. Or squishy, which rules out srixon soft feel, or Wilson dx2.

I found the same with the FG tour when I tried them, like hitting a marshmallow. Anyone tried the x version? They are supposed to be quite a bit firmer and hopefully longer too.

Interesting thread Craw

Did you notice much difference in the height the ball went through it's flight between different brands?

Cold, 1 degree, no wind and I wasn't looking at height or even trying to measure flight and other than eye I would have no way of knowing if the Titleist flow higher than the Bridgestone etc!

I know this isn't exactly rocket science and there are many variable factors, mainly my inconsistent golf swing, wind, bounce etc etc.

Anyway I went to the practice ground today and hit 100 balls with a 7 iron. When collecting them I noticed that my Callaway Hex Black balls were all roughly 3-5 yards further than any others. This got my curiosity going so I decided to conduct my own sad little experiment. I really need to get a life!

I looked out 2 Hex Balcks, 2 Titleist Pro V1, 2 Pro V1x, 2 Z-Stars and one each of a Wilson Staff FG Tour and a Bridgestone B330 rx.

I then got my 8 iron and hit all 10 balls. The 8 iron produced the same results when I went to collect the balls, the Hex Blacks were 5 yards further than the ProV1x and the Z-STAR with the Wilson Staff being the poor relation about 10yards behind the Callaway.

Off I trotted again and grabbed a 5 iron and again the Callaway was 3-5 yards ahead of the ProV1x and the Z-Star. Wilson again last place by over 10 yards! Finally I launched into a 3 wood off the deck. Despite hitting a horror with a Pro V1 the results were the same with the Callaway Hex Black being slightly longer than the ProV1x!

The main thing I took from this was don't use a FG Tour as you'll be playing a club longer for your second shot!

ProV1 - OOB!

Almost as sad a post as Dodger talking about flag colours!

:fore:

...............and a Molitor would have been 2 yards behind the Callaway.

Experiment conclusion? Callaways are and have always been bricks.

I've actually got quite a smooth swing, roughly 100ish mph. I would choose the RX out of all the Bridgestone B330 range. The ProV1x surprised me this year when I tried them. It seemed to react better on the greens than the ProV1.

Fair dues and interesting that you get more out of the ProV1x around the greens.

Murph I'm with you. Hex is great until you need to chip or putt and then it's much too firm and clicky.

The FG Tour X is a much better ball, feels good off longer clubs as distance wise very comparable with the Z Star, feel wise for shorter shorts is very good. So much so I have taken to using the Tour X ball as my ball of choice as it edges the Z Star for short game feel.

Cheers Fader, I might try out a sleeve
