Just a thought that popped in my head.
I havnt thought about it at all much
But,is there anyway we could have a match play forum comp.
Of course we couldn't have everyone, but maybe a 3 hour radius.
Or a forum matchplay meet.
As i said only a thought.

Could be possible but to get a decent number of people in would maybe have to be over a weekend even 9 hole matches could be considered? , or other way would be regional divisions and then. Finals day weekend similar to other national matchplay comps.

You could have regionals then onto a finals day somewhere

We've talking about this in the north east golf society page, where perhaps the different regional areas of the UK compete. Us lot from the NE are trying to organise something with the Yorkshire lot for next year, not sure if it will come off but if we get sufficient buy in and numbers, I don't see why it shouldn't.

It would be good if other regional areas wanted to participate as well, North, North-West, East, West, you get the picture.

Weird, I was thinking similar last night while watching the Trilby tour, some kind of knockout where you play locally, then regionally and then hook up somewhere in middle earth for semi and final.

£10 per head entry to get some prizes (pay for the final) and then we just need someone called 'Pokerjoke' to organise it all :ears:

Would this event include a nice outfit from Primark and the winner will be a 'World' champion??

If so... I'm in!! :D

Didn't the NW lads moot a similar idea but OOM style event rather than matchplay?

Matchplay would obviously be more difficult than stroke/stableford in terms of having a big forum competition as lots of rounds would need to be played and organising lots of rounds isn't easy when you've got a 3 hour drive home.

Without doing it over 9 holes or organising ties in micro-regions, it would be a bit of a struggle.

However, if anyone could counter that argument, then great as it would be superb to do a matchplay format event.

Would be good to have a nationwide Trilby-esque tournament for forumers though as we're a large enough and tight enough community to run it well and airily and I would be happy to lend my organisational 'skills' (read; I have a lot of time on my hands during the week) to get thins up and running.

I do think that GM backing would be good I.e. allowing us to use their name to book courses and negotiate discounts etc and would give a lot of credibility to the events.

Thought I'd found an old thread in the archives here. It'll be interesting to see how this develops and if the same conclusion is reached as in previous ideas like this :D

Nice concept but it'll never happen ;)

As soon as it "went public" the bandits would come flocking at the thought of a decent prize. Unless of course you are only playing for forum bragging rights.

That's the spirit!

I'm going to fire off MikeH an email to see if we can get the ball rolling.

The nearest anything like this got to happening was the GM Centenary Year events where the regional winners played off for the overall title at the grand final event. Even the regional events were mostly undersubscribed.
