Could be fireworks this morning.....

I used mine this morning in the medal and got a few stiff words from one of my partners accusing me of cheating. I told him to button it or I'd stick it somewhere I wouldn't get a signal and told him to a) come out of the dark ages and b) at least be up to date on the clubs local rules which have permitted them for some time.

Threatening behaviour Homer, not in the spirit of the game, tut tut lol

You should have stuck the head on him instead lol

Looking at it form a different point of view ..They are good for health and safety if your playing the 18th and you got the club house terrace behind th egreen ..you do not wanna take the risk of disturbing me and MWJ sipping our magners on the balcony......could be hell to pay!1

So with the sky caddy you know you got 180 yrds left not 200 so you can put ya 3 iron back and pull out the 5 iron so you stay out of trouble!

Smiffy its a pity you couldnt borrow a couple more devices like laser range finder and gps and fumble with them all just tyo get one measurement :D :D Im as wiked as you. ;)

I raised the question of whether the society would be allowing GPS in our comps and imo they bottled it, neither a yes nor no but 'it depends on the local committee rules on the courses we play'. They're wrong as it happens as local committee rulings on GPS in comps apply only to local comps, otherwise the EGU couldn't allow them in competition.

Funnily enough, the first society game this season I was in the first group with the club captain - checking perhaps? I've heard nothing since so perhaps he's realised that the GPS doesn't slow things down, just my rubbish golf!

Again, I played a course on Friday that I haven't played in over a year (and they've reversed the course). It's not plotted and I didn't have a yardage book, it was a lot more difficult especially as at times I have a problem estimating ranges.

I hate the things, and sincerely hope that they are never allowed onto my own course, its just against the ethics of the game.

I totally agree ChrisMc, I hope my course never allows them. I don't think it's fair that you can be miles offline on a different hole maybe and have an exact yardage to the green / flag. The distance markers are on (or at the side of) the fairways of holes for a reason. That said I wouldn't throw my toys out if someone was using one on a course where they were allowed, but I too would be trying twice as hard to thrash him. Now, chippers....don't get me started. :( ;)

Personally i don't like them and anybody playing off 5 & above really shouldn't use them IMO as i dont beleive they have the ability to put the ball within a yard of the target consistantly over 18 holes so what does it matter if its 129 to then pin or 134 to the pin.

As for chippers, if you cant chip a ball with a PW then you shouldn't be playing golf IMO.

I had a go with an Odessey chipper. It is a lot harder to use than it looks. The insert gives it quite a lot of check on quite a short chip. More so than a wedge. I think if anything, if you had to use one of these, you would struggle, and wish for a simple wedge to use. Hats off to any who use one, it is a tool that requires much practice. Ugly though, and still sits closed.

AS for gps, if the arguement against is you can't hit to the yardage anyway, why quibble at their use?

Hitting to the yardage is the whole point of using gps isn't it?

My point is most players off double figures don't/can't consistantly land a ball within 2yds max of target

I've no problems with people using them but you see a good few people "all the gear no idea " type playin off 20+ using them.

Thats quite a generalisation to throw out there , and to say no-one over 5 should use them is a bit OTT methinks.

I would say my distance control is one of my best attributes and the SC has given me even greater confidence when choosing the right club

As for hitting it to 2 yards I bet even the pros would have a job with that all the time , thats very high standards youre setting

I've got to be totally honest...
The only course I have really found my SkyCaddie to be invaluable up until now has been Princes. Links courses are sometimes incredibly difficult to club correctly due to the lack of trees etc. where you can use your experience to judge the overall picture when firing into a green. Also, the yardage markers at Princes vary in colour and have no set pattern. Most courses that have discs in the fairways tend to follow a pattern of say the yellow disc being 150 to the centre. Princes isn't like this, sometimes the yellow disc can be just 100 yards and can throw you out totally. Also, bunkering at links courses tends to be very crafty with most of them set well in front of the green to "forshorten" the hole making you think you are a lot closer than you actually are. This is where the SkyCaddie comes in useful. I am not looking to put my ball to 2 yards...I couldn't if I tried. Most of the time I'm just looking for conformation that what I see is "about right".
But as I say, I'm finding I'm using mine less and less now. And by the way, my mate didn't kick off on Sunday. He just accepted that we were using them, got his head down, and took the money off of us. It doesn't help that he is a total and utter bandit though....

I still use mine alot, whether my iron play is accurate enough or not. It gives me peace of mind, and that is worth alot. It does make me laugh when people use it from 50 yards though.

but what if you can't judge distances.... I struggle to eyeball the difference between say 180 and 160 yds... now I may not be able to hit it to two yards but even for me thats a couple of club spread. Or actually the difference between 110 , 90 or 70 yds....

I would rather be standing on the wrong fairway with a GPS to use for reference than not having one at all. Sometimes when playing new courses I find it hard to guage the distance and regularly under club the shot but with the GPS it tells me what the yardage is and I have learned to trust it, and hit the shot that I think will cover that distance. I still have to play the shot and if I was being pedantic I could walk to the nearest marker on the fairway and arc towards my ball giving me a guesstimate number but wasting 3 or 4 minutes in doing so.
