Stay with me, this could be a long post.

A couple of weeks ago I played in a medal, a board comp as it happens.
There were only 2 of us as the guy I was playing with was working and we played after he’d finished. Because of this, we were the last 2 out on the course.
Our course is loop of 10 holes and a loop of 8 and between the 10th and 11th there is a halfway hut. Everyone playing on a Saturday goes into the hut for food & drinks for about 10 minutes per group.
As we played the 10th hole the heavens opened. Think Noah and his ark.
When we finished the 10th we discovered the halfway hut was closed so we went to the clubhouse, 30 yards away, to try to get a quick snack from the pro shop which, as it turned out, was also closed.
I took this opportunity to put on my waterproof trousers, which I had in my bag, as it was easier than doing it on the 11th tee. I’d already put my jacket on whilst playing the 10th.
This took a matter of about 5 minutes and we then went straight back out in the rain and finished our round.
The guy I was playing with managed to shoot a nett 66 and win the comp, name in gold letters, trophy etc.:whoo:
I’m sure you know what comes next!
Someone has claimed that we sheltered from the rain for 30 minutes (untrue, we have witnesses) and that we have not played a continuous round and therefore should be DQ’d.
I’m of the opinion that our round was as continuous as anyone who visited the halfway hut and probably more so.

Opinions please.

My understanding is that, if the result has been posted on the notice board, and its proven that a rule infringement wasn't known and deliberate then the result stands.

Good to know that miserable cantankerous old gits are still alive and well within our golf clubs.
Agreed there no need for anyone to be disqualified. You did nothing wrong. If the result stands with your mate been disqualified I know what I would be doing with my membership fee next year

Your committee may like to be reminded about this decision.

6-8a/2.5

Discontinuing Play for Refreshment

The Committee may not permit players to discontinue play for refreshment for an extended period during a stipulated round. Such a condition would modify Rule 6-8a.
The Committee may, however, in the conditions of a competition, permit players to discontinue play for a short period of time (e.g., up to five minutes), if it considers there to be good reason (e.g., a danger of dehydration or heat exhaustion in hot climates or a need to warm up in cold climates).
However, since the Rules make specific provision for players to play without undue delay (Rule 6-7) and continuously (Rule 6-8a), such a condition is not recommended.

There was a thread on here a while back asking what the most frequently broken rule was, at any club with a halfway house I'd say the above is!

The only saving grace is that just about everybody playing visits the halfway house so no advantage is gained over the field.

Ours serves hot food and whatever time I've got there the pace of play at the next hole has adjusted so that there is always a delay on the tee whether you want to play straight off or not.

IMO you have not breached either 6-7 nor 6-8. The delay was, in the circumstances (putting on waterproofs), not undue and you took no refreshment.

So, no more than 5 minutes in the Halfway House then.........

Anyone got a stopwatch?

That was an 'e.g.'.

10 minutes was the norm at those I've been a member of that have had them.

Not keen on stopping myself - unless having a mare. Tends to ruin the flow.

He hasn't been DQ'd but questions have been asked. I haven't been to the club since but I am playing today. I'll see what happens and let you know.

this is a really interesting question - although it's a sad situation from the clubs perspective.

fundamentally you and your partner are the only ones who know whether your actions were designed to give you a respite from the adverse weather - the parallel with the historic refreshment breaks is a complete red herring (but one the committee may want to consider in it's wider context!!!)

you are not entitled to take a break from such adverse conditions - your call.

on balance and as presented, I agree with post #10
