Club Yardage...

My very rough train of thought when I'm walking to my ball goes something like this.

It's uphill so I'll add 5 yards for that, into a stiff breeze there's another 20 and 10 more because I'm freezing my nuts off. The flag's at the back and I don't want to be over the back so take 5 off. That's 30yds, so when I get to my ball and see the distance to the flag is 150, I know to hit my 180yd club.

Surely that's easier than measuring your distances into a strong breeze in the cold so you know which one to hit?

I daresay some people can just look at the shot and pull the right club, but I'm not one of them.

Yep yep and yep, I agree with this...

I didn't expect this kind of reaction to my post! Probably my fault tho as I made my point very badly!

My personal opinion is that some people worry far to much about how far other people hit the ball.

The OP said he was fairly new to the game and I think he will see much more improvement in his own game if concentrated less on how far everybody else hits it (that applies to everybody, not just him!). I would go as far as saying that worrying (maybe worrying is the wrong word, concerned/interested would be better!) about how far others it the ball could have a negative effect on his game.

If "most" people hit a 7i 150 and he only hits it 140, what affect does that have. Do you think that you should be hitting it 150 so swing harder, make other swing changes etc.. I'm not saying that you would, but think quite a few people do.

If you want to look at averages and other statistics. I'd recommend looking at your FIR, GIR, PPR etc, I think this is a great way to show you where you need to improve.

As for the original question. Hit 10 7i and 10 drives on the practice range this morning and measured with GPS. Average was 159 for 7i and 276 for driver (carry).

From my fitting in January carry was something like this...

D: 218
3W: 202
5W: 188
4H: 178
5i: 166
6i: 154
7i: 142
8i: 130
9i: 118
PW: 106
52: 90
58: 75

I've not been able to play in good enough conditions to get a good sense of what the new sticks are like on the course but those numbers aren't far from my old pings so I expect they're about right for this time of year. In the summer I normally work on a club less for each of the yardages above.

Sounds pretty similar to me. You need to know your yardages in good conditions on a flat lie but you also need to know that there's no shame hitting a 5i to 130yd pin if conditions dictate

It's the people that feel the need to tell everyone that they hit it a long way that grates. I know (and have played with) people on the forum who hit it a long way. One of which carried one of his drives at the weekend 280+ yards over a lake, in the snow - But the difference is, they don't feel the need to tell everyone every 5 seconds that they're big hitters. They let their golf do the talking.

thats a fair point, but why should someone replying to a thread like this get absolutely slated for telling the truth?

if they came on and started the thread saying this that and the next about how far they hit it then fair enough, they are clearly blowing their own trumpet.but not when they are simply adding to the current thread started by someone else.

some of the young fellas at our club can really hit it. i crunched one yesteday. as i was walking off the green i looked back and 3 out of the 4 young boys behind me put it a good 30 yards past my ball. this is with no run as everything is plugging. it was wind assisted. i probably should have put it in the air more but in saying that the 3 of them hit it a long way!

For me

Driver - 260
3 Wood - 230
3h - 210
4I - 200
5I - 190
6I - 180
7I - 170
8I - 160
9I - 145
PW - 130
48 Degree very low bounce - 130
SW - 115
62 Degree - 100

All of these Yardages when playing in good conditions

For what it's worth, here are my club yardage windows. Based on Trackman fits, experience and relative to a warmish day:

Putter: 30 :p
58w: 75-85
52w: 100-110
PW: 130-140
9i: 150-160
8i: 160-170
7i: 170-180
6i: 180-195
5i: 195-205
4i: 205-215
3i: 215-220
2H: 230-245
3w: 250-270
D: 270+

My irons are set 2 degs strong.

My 7 iron averages at just under 150. Everything else down (higher number club) is quite predictable.

a 3 hybrid can vary from 175 to 200 and the rest is all total luck. I have no idea for example how far my 5 wood goes, I've managed to get home from 215 before but also been short on 200 yards.....

not very helpful really.....

i think people are trying to give the distance they hit when they have a good shot with a particular club. we all know how these vary, alot with some people. :one:

Hitting my 62 with my vokey 100 yards is decent, but the vokeys are heavy wedge ive always hit my wedges further and i always deloft slightly to get a good contact, even when i deloft them, they go so high,

Hello ..

My name is Pants and I am now feeling totally inadequate :mmm::mmm:

Yea, there are some, shall we say, fanciful distances on here arent there!??? :-D

These threads do make me chuckle, especially when you look at the Sky Sports big drive distances at the moment.. 239 to 295 I think (taking out the 405 from the World Long Drive Champion). Many on here claim to be better than the people who play for a living!

It would be great to be in their head, they must believe they actually hit it that distance? I know some can from time to time, but we all know that its NOT their average. The evidence of the PGA backs it up!

I have never been a long hitter and to be honest never really cared. 235-240 and finding it on the fairway will do me everytime. If I can't get home on long par 4's I'll lay up and hope for an up and down as I usually get a stroke anyway. Might have a go at the shorter par 5's in the summer and if there isn't anything on the game or its a comp but very risky as my long irons and woods aren't great. Again, playing for the green in 3 and two putting is or should be stress free golf. If only the body and the swing would do what the brain is telling it we'd all get along fine and I'd be a happier golfer
