No one ever promised it would make sense!
Does it matter how far everybody else hits their 7i? All I need to know is how far I hit mine, I don't care about anybody else because it's not really relevant to my game.
The number of times somebody asks what club are you hitting ?.... They then change clubs based on what somebody else is hitting, even though they probably hit a different yardage with the same club! It's crazy..
Is the correct answer.
IT DOES NOT MATTER!!! THE GUY ASKED HOW FAR YOU HIT YOUR CLUBS, HE MAY JUST BE INTERESTED... YOU GUYS ALWAYS GET SO DEFENSIVE!!!
If you don't want to tell him then don't, but what is the point in coming on and crying about why he wants to know... if you don't want to answer the question the guy asked then don't... opt OUT!!
He may simply want a mental average so that he has something to aim at.

to be honest i am unsure of my exact yardages currently other than an 8 iron is 145-150 from there i would add subtract 10/12 yards per club but i am planning to have a play on a launch monitor to establish these correctly
Im not building a secret life trying to be you guys!!! I am just new to golf and rather than asking someone I play with who is equally new I would prefer to ask people who love golf enough to be on this forum everyday...
Is there any harm in seeing what other golfers average with certain clubs, and as Alex said why bother taking the time to moan on here. Best of luck with the new season guys I have a great time laughing at people like you who moan when its too hot or too cold too light or too dull and look forward to picking faults with everything instead of enjoying the game.
All the best,
I see where you are coming from with the I can hit it better than you contest but this really was to get a rough Idea to someone who has just started to really take a big interest in the game it genuinely is helpful to hear.
I dont think anyone is able to tell me to the cm what they hit a certain club but if I add everyones and average them out there really isnt a massive difference... yes 20 yrds is big in golf when you are getting that handicap down but like I say I am someone who is very eager to be a good golfer but without asking questions I wont get anywhere. This forum has cleared up so many things and gave me a new perspective on areas of the game I hadn't even considered before...
My only problem with this is that people are saying "summer" yardage or "normal" yardage - but to my mind there's no such thing. Granted you need to know approximately how far you hit each club because that's your starting point for club selection - how far is it, which club goes that far?
But when you look at the shot there are so many variables to take into account and the danger is falling into the "it's 150 yards so it must be a 7 (or 8) iron" mindset. Play the club and shot that'll get you nearest to the hole and the only way to know which is to practice them...
Also, I used to play a lot with a mate, we played lots of Inter-club and other matches as well as Daily Mail comps etc etc.
He was almost exactly a club shorter than me.
So if I knew what club he'd used, if he'd got it right than I'd know instantly which club to choose. If he was short then again I knew.
So taking into account what someone else has hit can be useful as long as you know their length in relation to yours (clubs!!)
