Club Yardage...

With my irons I work on an average for a few clubs and then, depending on wind, rain, temp etc estimate between them:

Rescue - 230
6 iron - 180
8 iron - 150

driver 240 ish
3wood 200+
5iron 175
6 165
110 9iron

rough idea of my distances. these are adjusted throghout the year due to weather. i also do not hit my woods or long irons to consistant distances due to a slice. i hit my 3wood and md 18* hybrid about the same on a good day so im replacing them with an 19* muzuno hybrid. will give me room for another wedge to play around with. its all about the short game anyway. any mug can get the ball near the green in 2 shots. its all about how quickly you can get down from there!

Does it matter how far everybody else hits their 7i? All I need to know is how far I hit mine, I don't care about anybody else because it's not really relevant to my game.

The number of times somebody asks what club are you hitting ?.... They then change clubs based on what somebody else is hitting, even though they probably hit a different yardage with the same club! It's crazy..

I trust in matchplay you claim the hole - 'hitting', presuming they are asking you before they hit??

Why do some people get so flustered over people who claim to hit it a long way?
I play with the father in law and he is shorter than me but is damn straight with every club. It's so annoying. And he plays off the same handicap.
I've played with a few people who hit it a long way too. It's not as if these people don't exist or must not be allowed to post on the message boards?

It's not that its the guys who constantly claim to hit it that far yet are 24 hcp, I'm sure someone in single figures can smack it that far but mid teens to high hcp simply do not hit it that far, nobody is that bad at the short game who hits it that far,as to hit it that far you have to have timing and good technique,it does not simply dissapear for the short game.

8 iron 187......:)

was a frozen winter green and it bounced 50 yards past.

but the carry was 137, i judge all my distances as carry as thats all thats important to me most of the time, not how far it goes after its landed, i can't do anything about that. ;)

Yea, I hit my 2 hybrid 250 yards the other day. Carried about 180 and bounded on 70 yards down the frozen fairway to end up a few yards short of the green. Only birdie I managed all day. Winter golf has it's advantages! :D

Don't be so sure:
I've played with a few who knock it a similar length to me, it rarely goes straight and their short games are woeful.

the only time i have hit the back fence at our range is with frozen ground. i was still proud as punch! Life ambition #17468 tick !

Driver - 240+
3 wood - 235
2H - 210
3 - 190.5
4 - 188.5
5 - 178.5
6 - 169.5
7 - 158.5
8 - 149.5
9 - 139.5
PW - 127.5
54 - 120
60 - 70.25

Above are with a normal swing but they go different distances if I hit them softer or much, much harder.

On distances and how far people hit clubs, in general terms, most golfers hit a 7 iron between 140 and 160 yards. From there, the 10 yard difference between clubs is pretty accurate.

Also I have played a lot of team golf with Cat 1 golfers. The golf i play now is usually with low handicappers too. I can say in truth that hardly any of them are a club longer than me or outdrive me either often or by much. So I am not being defensive when I say that some yardages on this post are mind blowing. I mean it. I am not boasting, just being honest when I say I am a long hitter yet I am dwarfed by some of the GM Forum. Incredible really.

It's the people that feel the need to tell everyone that they hit it a long way that grates. I know (and have played with) people on the forum who hit it a long way. One of which carried one of his drives at the weekend 280+ yards over a lake, in the snow - But the difference is, they don't feel the need to tell everyone every 5 seconds that they're big hitters. They let their golf do the talking.

My only problem with this is that people are saying "summer" yardage or "normal" yardage - but to my mind there's no such thing. Granted you need to know approximately how far you hit each club because that's your starting point for club selection - how far is it, which club goes that far?
But when you look at the shot there are so many variables to take into account and the danger is falling into the "it's 150 yards so it must be a 7 (or 8) iron" mindset. Play the club and shot that'll get you nearest to the hole and the only way to know which is to practice them...

My very rough train of thought when I'm walking to my ball goes something like this.

It's uphill so I'll add 5 yards for that, into a stiff breeze there's another 20 and 10 more because I'm freezing my nuts off. The flag's at the back and I don't want to be over the back so take 5 off. That's 30yds, so when I get to my ball and see the distance to the flag is 150, I know to hit my 180yd club.

Surely that's easier than measuring your distances into a strong breeze in the cold so you know which one to hit?

I daresay some people can just look at the shot and pull the right club, but I'm not one of them.
