So it costs £80 to put a plate on retention and then another £80 to put it back on?

So to swap over plates on our cars is £320 and I've lost the original plates for mine so if I wish to drive in between I need to buy a set of plates 😡🤬

No it isn’t. You pay the transfer fee of £80 to put the number on retention but it costs nothing to allocate the number to the new vehicle.

That's what I was trying to check.

Can you out your personal plate on a car that you don't own ?

What do you mean by don’t own?
My mate has his plate on a lease motor and HID has one one her PCP motor.

Currently my wife's plate is on the car with the V5 in her name and my plate on my cars V5.

We're thinking of swapping cars and that involves swapping plates too.

Am I overthinking this?

Yes, I bought a private plate for HID and assigned it to her car. You get the option to assign to someone else so it’s not an issue.

I would hold on for a few weeks yet, if yours is anything like my missus she will want to swap the cars back within a month. :)
