The time has come to upgrade one of our two cars. We currently have 2 x 5 door focus hatchbacks and now we have a baby, with trips away we just need more space.

We have been looking at the smaller SUVs (VW Tiguan/Skoda Karoq) or an estate (Passat/Octavia), though not drawn to a particular brand. Just need enough boot space to put the buggy in the boot along with some luggage bags....and of course the golf clubs/trolley (though not at the same time).

Budget wise we are looking at a max of £25k and in reality it will need to last us the best part of 10 years, so probably looking at something under 3 years now and as low a mileage as possible.

Any personal experiences gladly received

If you are looking at the VW Audi group, make sure you check the Seat offerings. You may be pleasantly surprised compared with their VW or Skoda counterparts.

We are pretty open on brand, just want something that is good build quality and will last. Just named those models as that’s what we had looked at so far.

We've got 2 estates.
I've got a 5 series which is spacious and comfortable for covering the mileage I (used to) do.

Wife has a mk3 Octavia 4x4 and it's a brilliant car. I previously had mk2 Octavia vrs that did 185k without missing a beat.
Wife's friend has a superb which is super comfortable and has a boot you could live in.

Before the Octavia she had an XC90. Which was fabulous, but massive and had the turning circle of an oil tanker. With the back seats down you can get a double air bed in and camp in it.

Mitsubishi Outlander. Quality motor with ample space but starts at £29k. Maybe you could get a very near new one under £25k.

I looked at a Skoda Octavia, ended up with a Seat Leon. Boot possibly not quite as cavernous on the Leon but the interior, oomph and poise on the road were superior for me, and I saved myself a good few grand. Only issue is that the dealer is further away than I'd prefer, but for one visit a year I can cope with it. If you've got a part number then universal parts can be ordered through the VW Audi network; mine came with a tyre repair kit that is in the loft, spare wheel off Ebay, new boot post (different length) ordered through the local Audi dealer. Skoda were a few pence cheaper, Audi has next day availability.

It’s a bit tricky as we have a sponsorship agreement with Volvo so have several brand new Volvos which get rotated when they hit 8k miles. I do a lot of driving in those which are gorgeous, but I don’t have £50k+ to spend on one, as much as I’d like to.

Echo this. Seat make fantastic cars.

I like the ateca lovely car

We have an Alhambra. Not a looker but litterally because we have 3 kids under 3 so need the space in back for car seats

Here is a pic I took today down the tyre shop.. it's parked near a vw Sharon...... As you can see. It's the same car.20201104_212110.jpg

Oh also will add my other car is a Honda hrv

We getting rid in April. Selling to the mother in law .. was great for 1 kid or even 2

The boot is huge. Fits golf clubs in without taking driver out!

Think that's cost me 25k from new aswell top of range

Oh and the magic seats in back! Fold flat upwards .. so you can put random stuff in

Had a TV in back

Used to fold one up for the dog when we went family walks

Obvs now it's everyone in the Alhambra

It's bearly moved since lockdown

they are generally all decent cars so it comes down to your individual specific requirements. Although i have never owned one i have a soft spot for what a skoda octavia can do as an all rounder. BMWs are also great and have had several but as a family workhourse for value i would probably lean to Skpda - boots are massive. Buy at the three year old mark and don't worry about higher mileage and bag a bargain

Wife has a Honda HRV, boot is a good size and cabin nice and doing too.I
I'd say it's worth a look.

If it could fit 3 car seats we wouldn't be getting rid of it. But it's that good we selling to the mother in law. She really likes it

I said to the wife there no point me buying it off the PCP if we can't fit all the kids I might aswell use that cash to lease an electric car and save money driving to work

So we approached the mother in law knowing she wants a newer and bigger car .. I said if you want it just pay the final payment to me and I'll pay them and it's yours.

Magic seats and boot are class leading

To be fair you won't get much resale on any 10yr plus car. At that point you run it into the ground, the most environmentally sound option.
