Canada Geese

I thought that there was talk of allowing people to kill Canadian Geese for the dinner table as there were so many of them. The club could add roast goose to its sunday carvery menu......

Not Geese, but hundreds of rooks and crows hunting leather jackets in the ground:(

Half the 9 hole course, the practice ground and the 18th and 1st fairways look like they have been hollow tined.

Lots of Molehills on ours at the moment.
Seems like a Mole convention at times...........

Lots of crows around the 15th green/16th tee too.
Not much trouble from geese - they tend to go to the big lake in the Hotel grounds that borders the course..

I despise these damn birds! I used to work and play a lot at Chartham Park, anyone who has ever played there will tell you that year round the final 3 holes are covered in geese crap! It's horrible.

Luckily at my new home course in Essex there isn't much water so geese aren't a problem, apparently we ha a family of Adders last summer on the 11th and 12th which gave me the willies but I never saw them luckily!

we have some swans, since i got my new WHITE powacaddy bag two of them keep following me. i dread the day it actually tries and ahem trys it on.

We have a number of swans - love them and one pair raised 8 youngsters this year. One almost landed on me a few weeks back though as it hit the power lines. Came down with a thump and I was sure it would be injured but it stood up, shook itself off and wobbled onto the pond. Apparently a few years back one did die in similar circumstances and there was a popular white bag at the time and it's poor mate kept thinking the bags were his partner back - not a pretty sight!

Here's our pair on the first. Swans on the 1st.jpg

The father in law says Canadian geese are a pain for fisherman too, he says when the guys at his fishing club see a nest, they destroy it.

Unsure if thats a good thing or not

Your greenkeeper should be getting the sack for that. A simple non harmful pesticide would have cleared that before it happened.

A simple solution is to get someone like me to come along and shoot a few. Club kitchen can offer roast goose and the members can eat the creatures that were trashing their beloved course.

They are on the open licence so can be shot legally and humanely. They are pretty good eating too. Probably the best of our native wild geese I would say although I am not a huge fan of eating goose full stop.

It tendss to be a little greasy for me and I am not that keen on the taste either. In fact it reminds me of a recipe that cropped up in the Field magazine a while ago which basically said to ensure that such a big bird is cooked through, place a clean house brick inside the birds cavity prior to roasting.

The brick heats up during the cooking process and ensures the middle of the bird is properly cooked. After five hours, take out of the oven and allow to rest for 20 minutes.

Remove the brick from the bird and serve it for dinner as it is a nicer experience than eating the goose! :D

You'd be pulling your hair out if you played the forest of Arden then.Geese all over the front 9 and Deer all over the back 9. :D
Cant remember seeing the geese mayb wrong time of year or i was too nervous at that stage , the deer were magnificent tho , was a beautiful day & they were just lying around never even moved as we went by

When I visit my daughter in Jersey I often play Les Mielles golf course with the son in law. It’s more like a wild fowl sanctuary than a golf course. Water everywhere with thousand birds, almost impossible to avoid the bird muck. My brother played with us on one round and he hit one goose and one duck with his ball in the same round. He injured the duck quite badly, so much so it put him off his game.

My brother is a casual golfer; his handicap would be high 20s if he had one. But we still talk about the day he got 2 birdies in one round.

Hopefully weather permitting; I will be visiting the birdies at Les Mielles next weekend and see if I can find a duck with a bad limp
