Can We Keep an Eye on the Language

Could we not have "watershed" time for bad language or even an "over 18" section ;)

One on the other forums I use has an over 18's non modded section which you have to have your user name approved to be able to enter. Boy they get some funny stuff posted in there, but taking into account the type of people that use that forum and the average age of around 24/25, some of the stuff would be frowned upon if read by some of the older members on here.

GB72 are you on a wind up?

Persistent swearing I agree with, though I've not noticed much of it have you got nothing else to moan about?

Pathetic.

And before anybody starts with the IPC media excuse, I'm sure a few swear words won't harm any multi million pound company wanting to invest/sponsor/promote their business through this site.

Whether you agree or not the rules for the forum, by the editor, say no swearing.

This is a public forum hosted on the Internet, how do you propose you enforce a watershed?

If folk can't write a post without swearing then it's a sad day for society. I know I have been guilty in the past of x'ing out or jumbling letters but there are other more elequent ways of writing and it isn't a lot to ask.

It was tongue in cheek........cue the winking smiley!!!!

I could not agree more. It is not only on the forum, but on the course as well just no need for it. Before anyone shoots me down I can swear with the best of them and often do. But to me part of the game is the manners and etiquette shown each other. Just makes life so much nicer, such a change from everyday life. I guess to me golf is an escape from the presures of everyday life. So why not make it as pleasent as possible. That includes swearing. So the mods are right guys.

Numerous other forums (foruii?) I frequent have swear filters. One, most amusingly changes The Worst Word in the World (tm) into the phrase "front bottom", which causes me to giggle like a buffoon.

I know we should all have the self restraint to moderate our language but on the odd occasion where we let loose the odd eff or bee it'd save our mods time if they were automatically filtered out.

Just my tuppence worth :)

front bottom would make me chuckle too... especially given the context in which is most normally used,. my understanding is most forums software packages down the line will have text sensitive filters. they dont have to be swear words, one forum had a known uk company threaten legal action as its members had received such bad service lots had started a feedback thread, everytime their name was use, all the content of that post would be removed instantly and it would also flag a caution to the mods to look at that thread in which the content was posted

It may sound OTT. but a content filter could save the mods endless hours, also if new stuff is being released and the manufacture doesnt want it on any forums yet (example G20), then you could add stuff like this into the content filter too ;)

I read once that potentially, any thread in here could be featured in the readers section of the mag.
Therefor, any language used should suitable to be printed in the mag for all to read.

And if we take that as a rule of thumb its easy to understand, but if we estimate a rough featured statement of say 200 words, is it really going to go to press without being checked first?... i doubt that.

Irrespective of your train of thought, going by the rules of the forum swearing is a no no. Why try and justify it in any way?

Not trying at all Chris, I am all for making the world a better place. But with bobs reckoning of any posts could be featured, i'm sure they would be checked before just going to press, so although its a rule in theory, it also carries little weight in the discussion.

But its noted and respected that the owners require as cleaner possible forum as possible, which is why i tried to be constructive in the suggestion of content filter settings, Ive modded other forums, and i appreciate that it can be a pain in the rectal area

I think the main points are that:

a. People of any age are welcome on the forum. I am sure that few of us swear in front of children and I do not swear in front of women (old fashioned and some may even say sexist). By swearing on here your posts could be seen by anyone and so swearing should not happen.

b. We get some great opportunities through the forum and these exist because the manufacturers see the forum as a worthwhile place to be associated with. If the language or the tone drops then the opportunities disappear.

It is in our own interests both for future opportunities and simply as a point of good manners.

I love swearing. It helps me get through the day. Such a shame that swearing is banned on this forum too as there is so much that merits a swear fest.

I try and be moderate though and refrain from the use of bad language as per the rules. I may have transgressed and if so, sincere apologies if I have offended any puritans, children, old ladies or the person who calculates the forum's demographics.

At least we can still swear in our PM's. Can't believe some of the things I have been called by Smiffy.:o
