By Jove - I think I've got it!

Come on lads the guy turned up for a meet if he wants to practice practice practice let him

We all have different ways

I'm not knocking him. Lets be honest I've done more than my fair share of work on a range/practice ground. I just think, especially from the H4H game in particular that playing a few holes more often, even if they aren't great adds to the memory bank. You simply can't recreate how to play a downhill chip over a bunker or a a good sand shot to a tight pin on the range. I'm not saying don't groove a repeatable swing but I spent most of 2008 on the practice ground looking for "the" swing and only played at weekends. I over practiced, had too many thoughts going through my head when I did play and went backwards big time. Last year I cut it down and played a lot more and went forward again. At the moment I'm putting some work in on my short game following a change in method and some lessons but I'm still trying to play a few holes several times a week

Good to hear you still have the odd top in the bag for when you tee off the first at Beau Tim. :D

My partner in fourball competitions sounds like you. He plays off 16, and hits the ball really well especially off the tee.(not as far obviously). His problem comes when he does miss a fairway he doesn't know how to play the recovery shots. He can't punch one out of the thick rough, or hit a low one under a tree. He struggles off side slopes, and his putting under competition pressure goes to pieces.

If golf was played off a tee on perfectly flat ground he would probably beat me every time, but fortunately for me it's not. You need to be able to play a variety of shots, under a lot of different conditions. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. There is no pressure hitting a ball on the range, but as you know, standing on the first tee with a lot of people watching is completely different.

Tim, from what I have seen (not much, but enough to comment) you have a lot of potential in the long game. But, I think your short game needs work. Your swing for the shorter shot is way too long, and decelerates into impact. A more compact swing, which zips into the ball will reap dividends pretty quickly. At the moment you have too many variables.

Just my opinion, and I have not seen much of your play.

Sorry hommer this wasn't directed at any one in particular ....he has his ways and that's good as you have also said.

I have coached cricket and the 10000 tepetitions figure is qouted in that training. The fighure does not relate to every different type of shot but is around about the figure to commit an action to muscle memmory. most swings have a basic action and i am sure that is what is meant by the figure.

Tim, I had a similar moment at the range last week, changed to a slightly stronger left hand and made an amazing difference, after a while I felt so in control I was even managing to draw and fade at will. Went to the course and could I replicate it... NAH!!!

Keep up the range work to 'ingrain' the new grip and once it becomes permanent you will be able to take it to the course. That doesnt mean you can't now but I find it easy on the range but once I have a scorecard and out of bounds/rough etc to navigate the swing goes to pot a bit :)

good luck and may the force be with you ;)

Nice work Tim. Don't get dis-heartened when you have day that you can't hit the ball for toffee.

Oh and please work on your bunker play.

We'll get a game at Brickhampton sorted in the next few weeks and I'm heading down to my gaff for 9 holes ahead of this weekend's club champ's if you fancy joining me, it's less than £10 for the twlight rate.

Cheers Tim. Reading your post made me check my grip again and guess what I found? Thats right, My left hand had somehow moved around the grip a touch resulting in a LOT of inconsistant shots. Headed to the range today to check it out and the difference was fantastic. I now have a new yardage chart for my irons, and much more confidence in my swing. Not sure about the mirror though. I found it very easy to check my grip just by looking down..at my grip...

I think because you started out as a bit of a range junkie you've been labelled as such, yes you need to get out on the course but we also need the range to iron out problems and practice. Tim you seem to have a better understanding of your swing than most of us and at least you spotted something your pro didn't! I personally like to play 9 holes in the evening to practice in but that's not working either so may have to get that discount card for the driving range!

I dont think Tim is a range junkie, what I do feel is that he is very determined to be the best he can and is willing to do whatever it takes to get there.

Its a man thing according to my missus, I am similar but not quite as determined and my car is slower than Tim's so he gets to the range quicker ;)

Sorry think I got misunderstood, tom wanted his swing etc to be as good as it can be before venturing onto the course which is admiralable and probably quite sensible. The problem is the course is a different beast. I'm no good at either so am passing no judgement. He now knows this and is so trying to improve both aspects. Hope this makes sense and I wish him all the best as he seems very driven and hope the bad rounds don't get him down as some things we have no control over.

Forgot to add (for anyone interested): I also found that my right hand was sliding further and further down the shaft. Now I concentrate on squeezing the hands as close together as I can get them. The wrist action for lag production now seems much more natural. I'm still gobsmacked at the difference.

:D

Do you not overlap or interlock your hands then?
