isn't your course members only and no visitors Del?
Members plus members guests and members of other Crown Group clubs and their guests only. I pay a slightly premium sub for this, and I believe that Crown Golf would like to open it up to green fee payers to make a bit more profit, a move that is being resisted by the members.

So what are these municipal courses you have played recently ?

Haste Hill in Northwood (it was still open when our course was closed a few weeks ago) and Ruislip. Also played a few Pay and Plays when away from home.

Membership is quite healthy at Haste Hill and as with most courses they will have had to battle the elements throughout the winter - but they run it down that much it was still open when yours was closed ?

I think it's prob fair to say your generic statements of Doom and Gloom aren't really a true reflection maybe ?

Private courses are also going under threat of housing development , Surrey national is a perfect example of this.
Basingstoke GC is going as well, although I believe they are getting enough money from the development to pay for a new course. It won't be over 100 years old though! I have just heard that North Worcestershire Golf Club near Birmingham will be closing at the end of March.

Haste Hill seems to have rather more ditches and drainage than Batchworth Park, but then we haven't really needed them before. I understand that we will be investing in better drainage for the boggier areas of the course this year.

My dads one of those affected by this, hes had some good years at Brocket including him being captain and his wife being vice-captain but they are moving on to pastures new it seems

That's a shame he is moving Steve - where will he end up ?

Hes in portugal at the moment so not sure, I know he had a trial membership somewhere recently but dont where or know how it went. He'll be fine though, he usually is :)

Essendon isn't far I guess - two good courses or even Aldwickbury

Expect he'll be looking for somewhere thats a more gentle walk, they always planned to go to somewhere "more manageable" now theyre getitng on a bit, not sure whats hes got planned but theres far more options there than we have round here!

DelC's usual unfounded knee jerk rant........
Courses will close and courses will open.....there are plenty of options available to all categories of golfers to suit differing budgets.
There are dozens of high end courses around that are just as expensive as Trump that companies goal is to make money....making money isn't illegal, but you constantly bleat on about him as though he's got no right to make a profit.

Most people drive a car, not everyone drives a Lambourghini, a Bentley or a Ferrari........should those car companies be given a hard time because not everyone can afford to drive one?

The ideal golf club for me is one where the land it is built on, the clubhouse and all the other assets are owned by the members. Then there is no need to make a profit, beyond what might be necessary to cover any contingencies. I thought that many of the debenture based clubs that sprung up in the 1980"s and 90's where intended to achieve this, but obviously not. Our club was built on this basis, but it has gone through several changes of ownership and the original debenture holders have little chance of getting their money back if they leave! Most of them have become resigned to this! Fortunately for me I joined after debentures were required as a condition of membership.

I understand that Centurion is an arm and a leg type course owned by Troon Golf. I also know that it took years to build, because I used to work in that area. I haven't yet played it (any chance of a invite?), but is it really that much better than your previous more traditional club?

By a country mile - the two course arent in the same league by a fair distance.
