Balls....

Obviously, this a flooded and confusing market place. I have played with loads of different types and makes and models and I have purchased several 'tubs' of lake balls (most of which I think I have lost now) but I cant seem to make my mind up what is working for me.

The lake balls were all Titleist ones, but obviously, I dont know what model as they have all been reconditioned.

I bought some Callaway Diablos, but didnt really like them and they started to come to bits after three or four shots, now I know this is to be expected, but after such a short time?

Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be any good to try? I have no handicap yet, but have already played two of my three cards and a couple of the other members think the committee will give me something like 21-22. I hit the ball pretty hard (Just been up the range and have been hitting my 3 wood around 250-270 pretty consistently) and have a bit of a tough time generating spin...

All suggestions welcome (As well as the sarky comments this is likely to spawn ).

Bet they give you 18. The Worsley committee have form for it. Bloke I work with put his cards in a few weeks ago - all around the 100 mark. Gave him 18.

My favourite balls are NXT Tours - pretty long, decent control and don't seem to cut-up. AD333's are a great value option.

It really depends how much you want to spend.

Wilson DX2 and DX3 always get high praise on here, as well as Noodles.
I also like Bridgestone balls. Their website will recommend a ball for you, maybe B330RXS?

when i started playing golf i lost most of my balls off the tee, so i used cheep old balls. but even as a begginer i noticed i couldn't stop them on the green. so when playing FRIENDLY GAMES i'd tee'd off with some cheep crap then swap the ball for a good one on my second shot. i must stress that this is against the rules and will need your playing partners consent. its just better than loosing expensive balls while your working on the fundermentals.

Here is my tuppence worth, Buy the balls on offer at the time, the best one's at the price you are willing to pay and just go and *wat them. When you get to single figures then choose a ball that does what you want it to and then stick with them to get used to them, thats it really.I don't think anyone needs much more than that

Hard.
Goes further. Hooks and slices less.
Less 'feel' around the green. Harder to stop.

Soft is opposite.

I thought this might breed some skepticism, apparently, my build helps...I'm hitting that thing with 21 stone behind it. And I am well aware that the markers on the range I go to may not be so accurate either.... Its not the most salubrious place in the world. That said, I did make the green in two on the par 4 SI 1 hole on my course with three wood and eight iron. Which I promptly followed with 4 putts.....

All good budget balls, use and like them all under different conditions

I love prov1x for comps though, I allow myself 1 per comp and when it's gone I generally play with a srixon.

It depends what you want and how much you are prepared to pay. If you are losing say two balls a round on average, then a box of premium balls at say £40 roughly may last you six games whcih if you play both days at weekends is three weeks. Say on average a month that's £40 per month. For that you will get excellent control on the short shots and less driver spin.

However you've said the short game isn't great. No reason why that won't improve with time and effort but for now it's not so hot. For that reason I'd leave premium balls alone. For my money the next level down (DX3, AD333, NXT etc) are pretty much of a much ness. Slightly firmer off the club and a degree less spin on the greens they represent probably the best compromise for your level of golf. I'd avoid lake balls (water will deteriorate their performance) and refurbs (no two balls will perform the same) unless necessary and would also give rocks like Top Flite and Pinnacle a miss as there are far better alternatives on the market
