Augusta - how much would you pay?

But it's not. I fully agree that if I had the opportunity to play it I'd take it, but if someone came to me and said I could have one course in the world off my bucket list, Cypress Point & Pine Valley would be ahead of it for me.

I'm not claiming it's a potato field, or blocking it on grounds that they are a touch politically incorrect, it's just not top of my list of courses I'll never get on.
That’s fair enough !
Everyone views thing differently.

Don’t know - couple of hundred maybe - but Mrs Hogie has mentioned to me that she’s rather missing watching it. It was her introduction to golf when we met. I had her staying up late with me a couple of months after we met to watch the last two days of Sandy’s march to the title. She’s watched it with me every year since - and so that’s 31 Masters she’s watched ?

I feel a little queazy, owning up to being so contrary, but it genuinely wouldn't be top of my list.
There's too many things that it represents that I don't particularly care for.
For me, the finest British links and heathland courses would be above it.
By the seaside, in Scotland, on a fantastic day (!) is better than manicured, everything perfect, greenness.
Shoot me.

That's fair enough, you like the rough stuff, some people do :D:D
I like my tea a different way from you.... and some people like coffee (y)

...as long as you don't say you'd rather play the local muni :eek: LOL

When top courses are being debated, playability in my book is number one and for that reason Augusta is not rated by me, even as a major you have too many who have not a hope in hell winning, only there because they did manage to win in there prime, I wish more were like Faldo in that respect.
So as far as a bucket list goes dream on they don't want you simple as that.

Must be a right bog as well seeing it's open for play for about 7 months of the year :ROFLMAO:

If you got the chance to play it I think you just have to completely reset your expectations. For an amateur club golfer playing on those greens (at tournament speed which I'm guessing they would be kept close to that year round) with those slopes I think anywhere 5 to 10 shots over your handicap would be a very good effort.

I’d play it if I could afford to, no ifs or buts.
It normally comes down to if you’re allowed and can you afford to, for any course.
Everyone has there own set of variables ?

Greens are ridiculous mind I believe you
Slightly off topic. Pádraig Harrington was live on Instagram today with Elidh Barbour today and said that Augusta have date on everything there.

Said they can move a hole 3 feet right and would add x to the scoring, move a tee box 8 feet and it would effect scoring. Also said if they wanted us to shoot 65 all day long they could but could also set up so no one would break par.

Fascinating stuff.

Greens at Augusta are ridiculous mind I believe where you set the pins massively impacts scoring ... the first 2 par 3s are absurd depending where the pins are

Peter Allis once said “ a good low capper wouldn’t be able to handle the greens”
Looking at the pros I would say he was right.
Chipping must be a nightmare.

I have heard and I don’t know if it’s true, if you write to them to say you are completing the top 100 courses and you only have them left to play you get an automatic blackball for life ?

I reckon pedro could sweet talk them into getting on.....

Talking to a pro a few years ago now who'd been to watch the Masters he thought that if every hole at Augusta was a Par 3 the 'average ' club golfer still wouldn't break 100, either never stopping on the green in the first place and that's before you talk about putting....

Think he was probably right ?

You could argue the same about any US Open venue.

Not difficult to speed up the greens to make them unplayable.

I can't see the point in playing it unless it was set up as would be for The Masters, in which case it would beat me to death and I wouldn't enjoy it. So I don't want to play it.

(In any event I'm in the camp that thinks The Masters is an over-hyped average competition with ridiculous greens.)

With an invited field - of which some would not normally be able to play a tour event.

Unless personal situation changes, I wont ever be going to USA.

Therefore I wouldn't pay anything to play there.

Personally would rather play a course closer to home with the family, get so much more enjoyment out of that, then playing a big name course.

I have absolutely no interest in playing Augusta National so there is no amount of money would I would part with to play it. All the comments saying its number 1 bucket list course or those that say they wouldn't play there are deluded per se make me laugh because people genuinely can't understand someone not liking the course or wanting to play it. Far many more courses I'd rather play.
