arranging knockouts rant

yes - the main reason i gave up entering the knockouts. lost time of the number of times i had the following conversation:

Opponent - I play tuesday and thursday mornings - can we play the tie on one of those days?
Me: No sorry, I work 9-5 it has to be a weekend or early evening
Opponent - How about Wednesday morning?

This is why my old club had 5 day and 7 day separate knockouts.
Also becuase it had 5 day membership

Trouble is, people enter when they have limited time to play then expect others to always accomodate them. I've known a pair to enter a comp then their opponents discover that A1 is on holiday for 3 weeks, and her partner A2 is on holiday for the next 3 weeks. So in a 6 week period they offer one day available to play!

I never seem to have too much trouble arranging singles games, mainly because I can play most times, pairs however can be annoying. The last pair we played were a nightmare to sort with but then you know youre gonna get a few like that when you enter

I held off playing my first round game until I was confident my game had returned enough to give my opponent a game, we'd already agreed the greens were rubbish anyhoo. Arranged the game, pecked at his head all the way round, tactics, put him clean off his game, 2 up and cruising. One bad shot by me, my game went south, all over by the 16th, right next to car park. Job done. I'm out !!!! Easy peasy ! Can't see the problem. LOL

Pretty much why I and the wife keep our comps to the minimum. Just too much agg trying to sort out matches. We would rather spend time on the course with our friends or visiting other courses with them.

I think the final straw may have been entering our winter fourball, partner and I got a bye in the first round. Then someone "important" in the club, realised they hadn't entered by the closing date. So they frigged the draw to let them in and we ended up having to play a match at the last minute to get in by the closing date.

most clubs I imagine have rules where the arranging player has to offer at least 3 dates within a period, of which 2 have to be weekend days.

as a 9 to 5 mon to friday worker, i didn't think that being able to play more or less any saturday or sunday for the duration of the period in question or any evening, was really being unreasonable to accommodate. too many times I offered a weekend day only to be told that those were the days "I play with my mates"

nothing but inconvenience constantly trying to 'accomodate someone in a 4 some'

add to that the last minute call offs, grumpy individuals and it's really not worth the small amount of free time I have to play.

Friendly games with friends and the occasional club medal is all I can manage now with such a heavy workload

Me and my mate were in a race to Dubai type internet one, which mainly plays through the winter.

The other pair said they cant play Saturdays at all, and Sundays they play in their winter league.......

No you don't sunshine, were not taking a day off work - shouldn't have gone in it of you cant play weekends.

At my previous club the responsibility to make first contact ALWAYS rested with the player on top in the draw - my understanding has always been that this is the traditional way of doing things. My current club seems to have forgotten this.

[MINIRANT]Why do we jettison so many traditional ways of doing things just because we can and/or because they don't suit some members?[/MINIRANT]

My feelings precisely. If you enter a comp then that comp takes a high priority - or you put yourself out to accommodate your opponent. Don't expect your opponent to put themselves out for you.

I get it can be difficult to arrange matches, but for me as I work during the week it's simple, I'll play Saturday or Sunday and offer them options for that. If they cant make it thats up to them, but as someone said above, I'm not taking a day off work just so someone can play on their preferred time (if they are retired etc) when they are perfectly capable of playing at the weekend but chose not to.

I think we have the top person on the draw has to contact, so i do that and offer 3 weekend dates. At a push I can make an evening date but thats harder this year with my job.

There were lots of VOID matches last year because people didnt play intime. Thats not a good thing

Well this thread just reminded me that I hadn't arranged my 1st round match, and as the deadline is the week after my baby is due, I thought I'd better sort it out!

I called the shop about 2pm, all organised and booked by 6pm, so thankfully nice and easy.

If the OP has left messages for both opponents and not heard back, my advice is to mention this to the comp sec in passing, give it another few days, do the same and then make a formal request to be awarded the game if they cannot arrange anything by the cut-off. I agree with others that it seems so much harder to arrange games. I gave my singles knockout as I couldn't get it sorted and it was too much hassle. Hoping the Nike pairs won't be so complicated but on past experience think I'm being optimistic

I must be either easy to beat, or good company. Never had a problem!

Same here - get my HC and Scratch matches sorted early and the foursomes matches seemed to be sorted nice and easily

Manage to sort the match out today sent a txt and both are away and can only do 2 dates between now and the 5th 1 I'm away the other I finish at 6.45 so that what we are going for. Surely if you know you have hols booked etc you would contact your opponents and try to sort it sooner. We better beat them now

I saw one of our opponents in the summer 4 bbb knockout today and said we need to sort it out. He said that any Friday afternoon is good for him, I reminded him that my partner works until 5.30 and then has to take his daughter to music lessons on Friday at 6 so that's not a goer. He shrugged and said to sort it with his partner - that bodes well for an easy to sort fixture!
