In the 1st round of the foursomes which need to be played by 5th June and as we are at the top of the draw I have rang our opponents up. Rang the 1st guy 3 days ago no answer but left a message ref game and gave 5 dates plus mobile and home number and have heard nothing so called his playing partner this morning and left a msg again with dates and both my contact numbers again have heard nothing. Now I'm away from mon til sat next week. And it's really annoying me that they haven't bothered getting back to me. If it's not played by the 5th we are both Dqd. Is it that hard to call me. And before anyone says they might be away the pro told me tonight that he saw at least one of them yesterday. I don't know why I bother as this seems to happen most years.

It seems to be just a part of these types of competitions, its pretty much unavoidable as life comes first, golf second.

I would not let it put me off entering though, the fun golf is worth any annoyance like this.

I gave up, arranging games is a total nightmare especially as so many at my club want to play midweek

This playing midweek is a real pain - for next round of our 4BBB K/O me and my mate have been offered 4:30pm one Wednesday and a 4:30pm the next Thursday. Folks are either not available, on holiday or already playing matches weekend days. Not on! Couple of weeks back I had to play two matches in the same day due to inflexibility of pm couple.

I could rant all day about this. It's a nightmare.

The one that really gets my goat (we have no rules about who contacts who) is I will write my phone number on the draw, and hear nothing, yet the next time I'm there my opponent has written his number on the draw!

He must have seen my number when he wrote his down, yet doesn't take it and call me.

After I won my first round match this year, I knew both the guys I could potentially face in the next round.
When I saw one of them I asked when they were playing, and they'd only made first contact the day before.
This is 3 weeks after the draw was published and only a week before the deadline.

Don't even get me started on better ball matches.

Quite frankly, these days, I don't care how good the match/company/craic will/won't be - its simply too much hassle getting matches organised and played on time.
As soon as one match, as described by Gary above, gets late it puts pressure on the next etc etc etc. You could also say that, in many cases, there's just too many competitions going on compared to how much spare time many people have.
The number of times I've had to rearrange plans to suit inflexible opponents at the last minute has just put me right off the whole thing so I haven't bothered for a few years now.

I am trying to arrange my 1st round match which has to be played by the 22nd June.
Emailed the guy a couple of weeks ago, to be fair he came straight back to me and said he would work some dates out but I've heard nothing since.
Due to the fact that we both work Saturdays and the occasional Sunday, time is a bit limited. It's amazing how quickly 4 weeks goes by when you only effectively get one day off a week!
Got the 1st round draw of the Nike's coming up soon as well plus the mens invitation and an Open in mid June. Not a lot of dates left!

Me been a member for 6 years now. So that's 6 years of summer & winter knockouts. And how many times have I not been the first person to try to make contact. Once. Flipping once. Latest is the Club Challenge and we had a bye into round 2. So we had 10 weeks to fix it. Have I managed it. Have I heck as like. Nearly had a date settled then he cried off the day before. In the end, he offered a walkover so I took it. Not the point though, is it.

Gets my dander up as you can tell. Problem is, I like competitive matchplay, so will continue to put up with it.

Rant over. For now...

My first year playing in our knockouts and already had a bit of chew organising my 1st round match against he seniors captain, he won't play weekends, doesn't like to play too early in the morning and the wife isn't happy if he plays more than twice a week.

The blokes retired, I work shifts but gave him pretty much 3 full weeks I can play but he wanted to play 2 days before the deadline next Friday.

Turns out we can't get the tee time we wante as there's a union match on and I'm at work till 3pm.

So now I've had to get up after about 5 hours sleep after finishing work at 11pm last night and tee off at 8am before work as it was the only date left we could both agree on.

I'm kinda hoping I don't progress that far if every match is going to be this much of a chew on.

Arranging matches can be a nightmare, especially in pairs competitions where somebody is always away on holiday or something. I ended up playing 2 singles matches on one day earlier this month, as that was the only day we could all make! Won the first match comfortably, but only just scraped through the second one at the 18th because my game was starting to wilt through tiredness.

I have rarely entered knockout games other than our winter league because of past difficulties. I've entered two this year as I have the ability to play during the week and, yes, I've spoken to to people I've been drawn against and, no, I still haven't got any dates from them and I know they'll all want to just give me one day they can make before the deadlines and it'll mean I will have to accommodate them or concede.

The only reason that I play our winter league is that I wrote the rules a few years back and said that it was predominantly a Sunday competition and games should only be played on different days if BOTH pairs agree, that way anyone who can't play most Sundays don't enter.

I've just emailed my opponent to see if it's possible we can knock it round one evening after work.
Just figured out my "free" days between now and deadline date (22nd June) and I have 5 by the time I take prior commitments and work into account.
So I can appreciate how difficult it is sometimes.

But if people don't have the time, don't enter. Sadly they do, and then it's impossible to arrange matches. I've given up, pretty much, as it's not worth the hassle to arrange a match with some numpty who will cancel at the drop of a hat, when I could be playing a nice game with my usual crew.

HID has had problems getting hold on the bloke he's to play. Has managed to though and is playing one day before the deadline.

Would appear at ours though that some are able to play after the cut off date and that's OK for them to do it:rolleyes:

We started asking an entry fee for our knock out and i would say half would never get played. its sort of worked but still only a handful bother to contact you. we have a rule that the challenger (lower name on the draw sheet) has to contact the higher. Ive been the higher name on all my ties yet only contact I've had has been one of my mates.

Im prob not going to bother next year, its too much like hard work, est as there are a few guys playing games as they know my partner works offshore and the later they leave it to get back to us the more chance they have of not having to play and us giving them a bye.

Foursomes is and absolute nightmare.....on many levels. Getting 4 blokes who are all keen golfers and who therefore play all the comps, maybe team matches and away days, coupled with family commitments and holidays together on a mutually agreeable night to play "half a round" is at best very difficult. I just don't enter any more, sick of having to bend over backwards to accommodate others or getting into coin toss situations. CBA with it at all. As previously discussed on here though......foursomes is a good test of a pairing but basically rubbish, so I'm not missing much :D

I've entered singles and pairs for the first time in a few years, and have been reminded why I stopped entering these comps. Will certainly be giving the pairs a miss again next year.

yes - the main reason i gave up entering the knockouts. lost time of the number of times i had the following conversation:

Opponent - I play tuesday and thursday mornings - can we play the tie on one of those days?
Me: No sorry, I work 9-5 it has to be a weekend or early evening
Opponent - How about Wednesday morning?

my missus had to play 2 knockout comps straight after each other last week. the singles then doubles this was all due to not being able to pinpoint a date to play.

The singles was fine but the doubles had to be played by 6 pm that date or both teams DQ. It got to the stage where she was told that a tee slot is now booked for 6pm and if you turn up at the tee and the other team is not there then you get a walkthrough!

Thankfully she managed to play both games and win but was zonked when she came home :)
