I’m still relatively new to Golf so maybe suffering from over enthusiasm, but damn, it’s March! The sun’s out… How can you not want to practice or play? I’m off up to the club to get in an hour putting over lunch

How many years does it take before the shine wears off the start of a new golfing year?

I think it varies, but I left the game for 6 years. Not because I stopped loving it, but I was busy and didn't get the itch to play often, despite living and working within view of Woodhall Spa Golf Club.

Now, I can't get enough. I'm down the range 2-3 times a week, trying to fit in gym time as well and as of this weekend should be playing most saturday's or sunday's and once the clocks go forward, I'll be down there after work at least once a week too.

I love this game (for now :D)

I think it depends on your age and what else there is to do in your life.

Clearly I have an empty life then, as I still love playing, and can't wait for the clocks to change, then I can play about 5 times in the week.

Not so keen on practicing though, which may explain why I am still cr@p after 20 odd years playing.

I've very very keen, but that's because I've only been playing 5 years. This year will be a new experience for me as I have left the club that is around the corner from where I live to one that's 15 miles away. I used to nip up to the course a few evenings a week and play a few holes as there are no practice facilities to speak of. My new club has a 9 hole course plus 3 practice/ chipping and bunkered greens plus a very large putting green and a range to choose from. I hope proper practice this year will help rather than just hacking around with no purpose!

I personally dont think you should need to get motivated,if, as like most on here love the game ,you cant wait to get out and play,I know the game can "jump up" and kick your ass sometimes, but you accept it and move on !!!..

I virtaully gave the game up about 10 years ago as i played a huge amount as a junior and between the ages of 18 to 21 it started to become a bit of a drag so I played less and less until I just stopped.
I Then came back to it 5 years later, joined a different (more friendly/less snobby club) and love it more than ever before.
However, I still find that if I play too much it ends up getting monotonous so I have a break for a couple of weeks.

Was mad keen on it as a youngster, then as a late teenager I discovered that birds, booze and rock music was much more fun. I then went to uni, got a job and now, ten years later, i'm back playing again and I'm loving it.

Motivation for it is easy to find (for me anyway).

I am probably more motivated as I simply don't have the time to play when I want to (wife and 2 small kids + inflexible work). Because of this, I really look forward to the times when I can get out and don't take it for granted.

Don't think I would ever be demotivated if I was playing really badly, just more determined to try and work out 'why' and then improve.

I've never let the quality of my play de-motivate me. With golf you just have to accept that one day you're good the next bad.

I went completely off the game at the end of last year but have really got the bug at the moment.

I think if you are mad about it 24/7 then you will have spells where you just aren't motivated any more. A welcome break from the game is always healthy in my opinion.

very much motivated after a recent cut and a draw in the daily mail classic single knockout. but this dam draw/hook is getting to me and i want it gone by the end of the month.

Oh yes!

21 years and would love to play every day (course or range) if money was not an object.

Oh and Masters being 5 or 6 weeks away is way more exciting than Christmas ever was as a kid!

What sun ? :( Never had the shine to wear off re practicing, but playing is a different matter. ;)

I have played for about 13 years and never once thought of packing up. I always look forward to the next game only get despondent if the weather fouls it up
