American Golf is a good shout for second hand putters. You can try them out, and they can be stupidly cheap. I paid £23 for a Odyssey White Hot 2 ball putter about 3 years ago. Am still using it, really like it.

Where did you find it at that price american golf?

Putter purchased. I may have been slightly extravagant

Nipped to a local American Golf - had a quick go with a blade a mallet and a huge thing - seemed to prefer the feel.of the blade.

Then went to an independent golf place nearby and they had LOADS - The pro was about so he talked me through lots of things and was very patient - in the end I seemed to be erring toward blade-ish and soft-ish feel/sound and then having tried a few with fatter grips found it harder then using a regular grip, so he plucked out one that had a fatter grip, blade(ish) and some fancy face stuff and sure enough it felt really nice to me.

So I've shelled out £129 for a Odyssey O Works 1 WS.

He certainly didn't steer me toward spending that much and kept me trying a few used ones that were also pretty nice and some less costly brands but I'm happy with my purchase - certainly decent enough that I can learn and see how I get on with it.

£129! - blimey - not paid that amount on a putter in all my 40yrs of playing :)

But good putting - you'll do just great with it.

I'm rather of the view that unless you have been at it for ages - putting is kinda like happiness. With happiness you are as happy as you want to be - with putting you're as good as you want to be :)

Pretty steep, but in fairness if you like it you could have a putter for life (provided you stick with the game), or if not you should be able to sell it on for not very much loss. Odyssey's will always be in demand and not lose too much value.

Hi there, I’m a late starter (47) beginner who on a bit of a whim purchased a used 7 iron and went to the range a few weeks ago. I did the usual “watch a couple of Youtube videos and give it a go” thing and predictably whilst there were some decent seeming shots it was quite inconsistent, and I don’t even think I held the club the same way twice :)

I’ve booked onto short group course (and hour a week for 4 weeks starting in a week or so) locally so will be hoping to get some proper instruction to start me off.

In the meanwhile, I also bought a random used Driver and went to the range with a friend (plays off 7) and he gave me a couple of other basic tips while I hit that and the 7.

ANYWAY: another friend has sold me his old irons and a 3w and a hybrid for cheap, and I’m thinking ahead to when I might make a first foray out onto a 9 hole local course (the low handicap friend said he’d be happy to take me out after my lessons) and I’m aware that before that day I’ll need balls and a putter.

Putter: do i just buy something cheap and see how I get on from there, or is there something new or used that’s going to be most useable for a beginner?

Balls: just buy used ones cos I’ll be losing them? Or budget new ones? Or...?

Any patient, noob-friendly input very gratefully received :)

Thanks
Tim
Get lessons first and foremost, buy a cheap putter that feels ok. If buying cheeper balls buy saison AD333 balls but the better you can buy the errr better. Always use the same make ball. Premierlakeballs.com pearl grade are very good. If you get the golfing bug, get fitted for clubs ASAP, ideally at a local pro shop specialist.

Most of all, even the pros hit bad shots, accept them and enjoy this amazing game for what it is, accepting you’re not turning pro.

Coincidentally the used balls I ordered from eBay are AD333. Let's see how long it takes me to knacker or lose 40 of them

A sizeable chunk of cash, but seems like a good purchase. When it starts to go wrong - and it will! - just remember that session, how it was the best choice for you and how it it's the animate Putter that's at fault, not the inanimate one!

Aye - I can't really explain why I felt fine paying it - other than maybe it struck me how very different they all feel so the notion of leaving without something then buying blind seemed scarier than feeling comfortable with a (..n expensive) choice haha.

Indeed - I know I need to just spend time now and do the work.

Always a personal choice for putters but you've found one you are happy with. A putting lesson to learn and check the fundamentals is always a good move
