• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Are we now entering the 5 wedge era?

They are not wedges in the old sense....more like 8 and 9 irons.......

forget what is written on the bottom of the cub and go with degrees.

Thank you for reading my post this time.
Post #9 came directly after your post #8. Shame you missed it, but never mind, no harm done.
You’re a strange one aren’t you not sure why it bothered you so much that I got my info from google and not your post regardless of whether it was a previous one to mine. Really was an irrelevant response and added nothing to thread bit like my pointless reply to you now. I’ll make sure I Read all your posts in triplicate just in case they have relevance even though it wasn’t you I was actually conversing with on the subject. I’ll also tell my dyslexia to only read what you wrote instead of having to double check things for myself when it comes to written words, which is why I’ll often google something for peace of mind and accuracy rather than just quoting previous posters points regardless of whether they’re right or not! It’s also why I’ll often edit a post to correct my own errors in spelling etc!

Anyway how about we get back to the topic at hand as this back and forth is just pointless point scoring to make yourself look good 😒

Titleist did it with their DCI irons many years ago.

titleist lofts 2.jpg

But it just led to other manufacturers strengthening their lofts without stamping them on the heads - making them appear to be better and longer.
Titleist had to stop doing it, because there was little or no demand for weaker lofted set of irons.

I would go further and make it compulsory for the lofts to be stamped on the heads.
It is time for customer driven power to be brought to bear on these extremely expensive items.

I've got a PW, 52, 56 and 60-and the 52 just confuses me as to which shot to hit with it. It's coming out of the bag - there's nothing I can't do with that club that I can't do with the PW.
I could sack off the 60 as well and just play the 56 with an open face at a push.
The odd thing is that I had a 52 vokey wedge and it was a passenger.
However since I bought my new Ping G430. I have. PW, 45,50,54 and 56 Vokey wedge. On a firm fairway, they are a thing of beauty
This time of the year, because the ground is so boggy, I might end up getting rid of the 50 and 54 til next year.

Or maybe have the lofts on every iron rather than a number. But the marketing folk wouldn't like it!🤣
Not everyone, but some, have their irons bent to change lofts. Probably only a degree or 2 but that still throws the numbering off..
What's printed/stamped on the sole means nothing to anyone except you and how far you hit it.
You can't even say " I hit a 7 iron, what did you hit" because that 7 iron, as we know, could be 27° or 34° or more....
The number purely indicates where in the set it lies...ie a 7 is between a 6 and an 8...
That's all....
People read too much into so many things.

I'm assuming that Tommy Armour 36° is a 7-iron.
My Ping Eye2 7-iron is 36°.
Played with a Ping i10 8-iron of 38° for the last 18 summers.
I am currently trying to get used to my Ping i530 9-iron of 37°.

This steady change of numbering has not helped me in any way.
A 36° iron from 40 years ago is much the same as a 36° iron today. There was, and still is, no need to change the numbering.

Time for a reset to sensible numbering - is my view.

Personally I don't care about what loft my clubs are (and I don't know what they are - apart form the couple with it stamped on). What is important to me is how far I hit each one, and if people were honest then this is also what matters to them. ;)

This is me. Pair of mizuno wedges in the bag stamped 50/52

The 50 is bent to 48... and 52 bent to 54

Irritating but had to work with what I could get at the time
