Maybe Sandie, if she is reading this thread, could give the definitive answer about whether or not trolley batteries should be fully discharged.

Certainly. I've tried to keep it as concise as poss..The battery manufacturers all say the same; "the cycle life of the battery is directly related to the depth of discharge". Theoretically all lead/acid batteries will last longer if discharged as little as possible between recharging.

Golf trolley batteries are designed to cope with fairly deep discharging, but the same rules apply and it's better not to discharge them more than necessary. It's certainly not good practice to deliberately discharge a lead/acid golf trolley battery completely. Now and again won't hurt it too much, but there's no point because doing so regularly will reduce it's ability to hold a charge, and therefore shorten it's life.

There is one situation where draining a battery serves a purpose; if the battery can no longer hold enough power to complete a round, i.e. it's already worn out. Then, a complete discharge will rejuvenate it for a short while, and might allow it to be used for a few more rounds. This works by partially breaking down the sulfation that builds up on the battery's plates over time. It is only a temporary effect though and a new battery will be required soon.

The reason golf trolley batteries should be recharged as soon as possible is because the sulfation process is faster in a discharged battery. For this reason it's always best to recharge the battery as soon as possible. So even if the battery has enough power for 36 holes, there's no point in not fully recharging after 18 if you have the opportunity.

Thanks for that Sandy.

That's the specialist's message I've been unsuccessfully trying to get across for a long time now, in fact every time this old sore comes up.

Hope you have had a good bbq. Go easy on the red wine in this heat :D :D

Golf trolley batteries should be designed for a heavy discharge. While I agree with what Sandy says, my original comment was regarding the 36 hole battery that should do 18 one day and 18 the next. After all that’s why the battery was replaced in the first place.
