Like most low teen to ten handicappers, the goal probably since I joined this forum has been the mystical single figures. Now I know there are plenty of much better golfers on here, hopefully you can still indulge those of us with less lofty (& more realistic goals). I have chatted to a few forumers over the years who were trying the same thing (and some had) - best of luck to those striving.

Having feeling like I consolidated a playing 10 in 2018, I felt it was a realistic goal this season, but as it is golf, I managed to creep back up to 11 recently and was starting to wonder.

This is where I could do with the forum, to remind me that reducing the handicap is the real goal, and not the trinkets etc. of handicap golf competitions.

Last week, in a medal 6 days prior to our club champs (& before you ask, the gross is the proper and real prize and our place does a decent job on having a nett champion also), I started to play well, wobbled, then dug in to grab a little cut (back down to 10). Reminded myself that this was the right thing to do, even if now I am 2 shots further back for the 36 holes of champs.

Saturday was round 1, and it was proper windy, with some rain early. I had the mindset to try and grind out a 'stay in the game' round, and it wasn’t going too badly but dribbled too many doubles and limped to a 87 (77). Many struggled but there were some really great scores and that left me 10 back, so nothing to lose for the Sunday.
Much better this time and finished with a gross 76.

When all sorted out, this puts me at 9.1 – yay!

Despite my recovery (finishing 1 under net for 36), it wasn’t enough to place anywhere. So it does feel a little odd to post a PB, achieve the season’s goal, but not really be acknowledged for it.

P.S. for those interested, I stuck some Benross irons in the bag for this season – me and Wolf should be on commission 😊

Thanks for indulging me, and for all the actual golf posts over the years that have led me to challenge and try things.

Cheers

While it's obviously not easy to get to single figures, it is even harder to stay there.
Fewer shots to play with a double or two and things get hard going.
But if you keep doing what got you there in the first place it'll start to feel more normal.
Play sensibly and you'll actually find it relatively straightforward hanging onto singles.
And you've been there, nobody can take that away
Welcome to the Club!

Well done

When you get there it is relatively easy to stay there because you are no longer putting yourself under the mental pressure of getting there.

congrats on achieving your goal and for a very tasty sub 80 ,had it not been for a serious leg injury i might have been posting the same story of finally arriving at the fabled single digit h/cap.

Well played. If you're good enough to get there, you're good enough to stay there. Push on for 8 now, you're good enough.

Thanks all.
Been looking back, I had a freak score of 77 in July 2013 when I was putting cards for handicap - I was a pretty genuine 12-13 capper at the time. Had been niggling away at me that after all this time, and having (IMO) improved that I hadn't bettered it. Good to put that one away.

At least I have 4 qualifiers at 9 😆
Will strive to feel comfortable with it and try to keep it going.
Cheers

Having played with you Iain it comes as no surprise that you have made it to single figures. You struck the ball well that day and clearly have a bit of 'game'.

Well done mate (y)

Thanks. You must be thinking of the London club as I don't recall much good striking (from me) at Hayling in a hoolie.

Was great to pick up some short game EDIT: driving tips though 😉🙂

brilliant! great going, well done and a few point ones to play with too!

I fell it will forever be just out of my grasp, 3 times I have dropped to 10 only to bounce back up, its great to read of someone persevering and breaking through the barrier!

Great news. I was so happy when I finally got over that line.

Golf is such a great game and there are many times when you just have to break through the glass ceiling just once then you become much more comfortable when you get to and past that place again.

Thanks Louise. You seem to have been playing fairly consistently around there for a while, hadn't realised. FWIY I spent the winter thinking about where can I find that one shot from. Less of a big deal 🙂

Thanks. I've been following your work, tinkering, and impressive progress this year 👍
