What’s the best amateur competition to enter? I play a lot of local opens, Love playing different courses, meeting new people and normally food laid on, which is always a bonus.

Doesn't that depend on your ability ?

For example, I'm unlikely to enter the Links Trophy nor the British Amateur.

If you’ve got loads of cash spare. You can play the Staysure Amateur tour.
Goes up and down the country and abroad.
I play a few events as a visitor. Good prizes.

Have a look on golfempire, loads listed on there throughout the year.

Your options improve if your handicap is lower. Entering county order of merit comps, scratch opens etc. (Again, check for top courses through golf empire).

What’s the experience like playing opens or something like the staysure tour as a single on your own..? I presume tee times are drawn and everyone is friendly enough without taking it too seriously..?

Keen to get involved with some of these events, but concerned it will be full of the type of golfer who never talks and takes it way to seriously..

If your paying £200 odd to play some of the countries best courses in a competition then yeah I’d be taking it pretty serious.

However, that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t talk to you etc

Other events outside staysure are usually drawn and also taken seriously but I’ve also pretty much always had a great time and made a number of friends

The Staysure is lots of people with lots of money and no concept of time. It is drawn but those that are slow often find themselves with the last tee times coincidentally! First time I played in it I was the second to last tee time. One of the lads plays all the time in it. He kept complaining about how he always got the last tee time.
If you email ahead you can get a morning slot.

All comps are qualifying and players are friendly. As are the organisers. Alas I can’t afford the time or money to play in it.
You can win good money though as there’s a sweep and places 1-3 get foot joy clothing.
