After playing well on Saturday in our Winter KO, Sunday was (relatively) garbage, and early on in the back 9 the score was shot to pieces and I started trying out different kinds of shots to what I normally would.

Our 17th is a par 5 just shy of 500yds, but if you go for it in 2 you have to take on a 20yd gap through big trees and over a water hazard about 40yds short of the green.

I got a decent drive away but being into the wind (for a change) it didn't go as far as I'd have liked it to have gone to have a crack at the green.
A good strike with my 4w would have got over the ditch but I didn't think I could reach the green with it so was going to lay up. I went to get an iron out of my bag and the driver caught my eye. What the heck... the scores already gone and one more lost ball won't matter!

Addressing a golf ball on the grass with a driver isn't something I'm used to, and with it having quite a deep face compared to my old driver the ball looked tiny sat there near the bottom of it. I managed to avoid lashing at it and caught it quite well. It probably didn't get more than 20' off the ground but went bullet straight towards the green.

When we got up there it had finished on the green leaving me about a 12' eagle putt.
I don't know why, but when I was walking on to the green with my putter to mark the ball I thought "wouldn't it be cool to go driver-driver-driver for eagle!", so I marked my ball and went back to the bag to swap the putter for my driver.

I played the putt with my driver like it was a belly putter (not that I've ever used one) and managed to knock it on what I thought was a pretty good line. Not good enough though as it finished about half an inch to the right of the hole.

If I cared at all about my score I would have used my putter on the green, and certainly wouldn't have hit driver for my second shot over the hazard, so I'm guessing it might have been a rare event if I'd made the first putt (not that birdie with 4 drivers happens all that often I'd guess!).

Has anyone else ever seen it/done it/thought about it?

Fair play to you. You may never have any reason or inclination to do it again but it's one of those things that now gets stored away and re-lived over a pint with different folk.

Until recently I carried 2 drivers in my bag. One to use from the tee and another that I always used from the fairway on the par 5's. I figured that I was as likely to duff a driver off the fairway as any other club but at least with the driver a duff tended to go straighter and further than with a long iron. And if I did catch it right I was either on or close to the green in two. I came within 6 inches of an Albatross on the Par 5 5th on the Old Course in St Andrews with two drivers. Had a strong left to right cross wind and got a decent drive away. Started my 2nd way left and watched it come back towards the green. Got up there and it was sat beside the hole for a tap in eagle. 3 net 2 for 5 stableford points.

Reading these posts has scarily captured my imagination!

*must resist, must resist!*

driver off the deck has been a secret weapon for me this year! I've used it a number of times. keeps the ball nice and low and goes a fair distance. for me and the way I swing at it, it has a really reliable flight. aim up the left side and it cuts back 9/10 times. bad shot is a bit of a slice.

I've tried driver off the deck on the range a few times but i come in too steep to be able to use it and i just end up hitting a nasty duffed cut shot and like you say i have a deep faced driver so the ball looks tiny and i've got no confidence with it off the deck.
