Played in a Texas Scramble yesterday.

On the Scoring card were instructions on play, one was "Drops to be taken from shoulder height within one club for the 2,3 and 4th players. ..

we observed several groups in front of us placing the ball, when this was raised we were told it was pick and place on the fairways. When i mentioned the rule note on the card the guy looked surprised!!!

Ultimately it didn't make that much difference to us as we just didn't sink enough putts.

But there is a distinct advantage from placing esp as Morays fairways were not in a particularly good state this year.

What do you think advantage or not?

My take would be that all players should be able to pick and place if the appropriate local rule is in place and players 2,3 and 4 should drop first and then pick and place - all assuming close mown area.

Unfortunately they didn't inform us and a few other groups that it was pick and place. all we had was the note saying drop.

If the fairways are a bit dodgy then it would be a definite advantage to be able to place.

Unless you got lucky and every drop ended in a nice lie!?

how did we not heed the comp rule's we followed the note on the card to drop. We were not informed it was pick and place and its was quit clear on the card... in bold, drop!

seems strange everyone else new the local rule except your group:rolleyes:

I think the point he was attempting to make is, that the rules were correct and everyone should have dropped and THEN applied the winter rules which must have been in operation and THEN placed the ball!

Why were you or any of your group not aware the winter rules weren't in operation?

How do you know that everydoby else knew the local rule, as stated, others were doing the same and dropping as per the instructions on the sheet, just like the other instructions on the sheet, such as 3 driver per player.

there was no mention of winter rules in place no sign and no instruction from the starter or the person i collected the card from.

so how the hell are you supposed to know???? you just can't help yourself can you:rolleyes:

Huge advantage when you get to place, you had no chance if some folk were finding a fluffy bit within 4" or is it just pick the closest nice bit?

Worse than that are the one's that have no idea how to hold their arm straight out and drop the ball from shoulder height, why do some folk crouch? :sbox:

Nice simple question. When picking up your card ask, "Are there any local rules in play today?" or "Where is the board displaying local rules located?"

So were winter rules in force ?

Was it a generic scramble scorecard with rules or specific one for the comp ?

Are there no notices to state winter rules in force on the first tee ?

Normally I see a notice in any pro shop when a local rule has come into force

We had a scramble last weekend. Normally the rules are drop within a club length in the rough and place within 6" on closely mown.

For some reason best known to themselves, this time they stated the rule in the rough was "drop in exactly the same place".
Well, we know the place because there's a 4" slab of grass missing, and you want me to drop in that?!!

Seems to me that if Winter Rules were not in place (bit early for that I'd hope) and there was no other competition specific notice telling players to pick and place - then if OP was only group dropping and NOT picking and placing then everyone else is disqualified and his team wins.

Problem could arise fpor reason others have mentioned - in a scramble the norm is to pick and place when on the fairway - not to drop. So teams thought this still applied even although the comp rule for the scramble that day was drop and not pick and place. Other than the OPs team they all either just P&Pd or dropped and then P&Pd - with in either instance the players breaking a basic rule of golf - touching your ball when it is play unless allowed or directed by the rules.
