Played a Texas Scramble on Saturday. Team of four with indexes ranging from 15.1 to 20.1. The club was using the recommended 25/20/15/10 split to calculate the team handicap and it came out at 15.0.
We scored 63 gross and 48 net! Reports of this kind of score always prompt accusations of cheating and/or banditry - but we didn't cheat and we're not bandits (well one of us has slight bandit tendencies but we're trying to beat it out of him!). Scores like this can and do just happen from time to time.

That’s a perfect example of how the HC allowances have made it near impossible for groups with very low HC players to play in

For our group to have beaten you we would have had to go round in gross 50

Well played Pedro

Love a scramble. It's just a fun format, so it really doesn't matter.
We play them socially for laughs.
Playing a Golf Pairs 4-person scramble next month at Ely just because it's a cheap way to play a nice course and guarantee a decent round. Have no interest in the prizes we won't win.

And why we’re thinking of introducing divisions based on the team handicap. ISV doesn’t allow it to be set up so it’ll be a manual exercise.

I don't understand why the allowances are staggered like that (25, 20, 15, 10). Instead of just saying it's the same off everyone. Can someone explain it to me like I'm 5?

You will need to ask EG

They made up the allowances and the reason for them is unknown

They will say by using “data” from clubs

But clubs didn’t send in scramble results etc

So it will be some random algorithm

My current club doesn't but my old club had a couple of scramble comps every year. My team usually had the lowest handicap and I think we won more often than not.
The prize was normally a cheap engraved pint glass.

I'm probably being thick but to me it doesn't make sense that one team might have handicaps of 2, 4, 6 & 8, while another team might have 8, 16, 24 & 28 but the 8 handicappers in each team are under completely different allowances.

Did have a look back through our winners and there has been a mix of low and mid HCs

And it’s always been quiet tight - with the results being tight between a number of teams

We are starting to see many just not bother with them now

Because the 2 h/cap doesn't 'lose' any shots when the 8 becomes 6 in first grouping but the 28 loses 7 shots in the 2nd group when the 8 becomes a 7

Stating the obvious but its to set a Team handicap

When I first started playing it was a case of add all the handicaps and you got 10% of the lot. Nice and simple. Only low h/c won, so I do find the current moans somewhat ironic.

The new system is overly complicated, never a good thing, and I am with you in not really understanding it. My current place rarely does one so thankfully it is not a big issue

I do think that somewhere in the middle is a happy medium but I am not sure what it is.

Seems daft to me having a scramble as a board comp. I see them as more appropriate for fun or charity events with prizes of negligible value.

I personally think 4 man scrambles should be off scratch.
I play off 22, each year we do a corporate day with a 9 hole scramble, our 4 ball one it once with a high points tally (We also would of won it off scratch so all good)

Surely even if all 4 players were high handicaps you've got a good chance that 1 out of 4 will hit a decent shot.
