My mate and I hit the 42 point threshold in an open last weekend (betterball pairs). He got a cut but I didn't because his score counted on ten holes and mine on eight.

In betterball, it's my habit to only write down the better of the two scores. On holes where we both score the same, I put the score against whoever holed out first. I'm wondering if I should start noting down both scores all the time (and obviously asking our marker to do likewise). We could each score higher on six holes and tie on the other six. Effectively giving each one of us 12 scores that were better than or equal to one another.

Is it possible for both players to get a cut in betterball stableford? Do the common competition software packages allow/expect one score or two for each hole in betterball? And is each score entered against an individual or just against the team? Wondering if anyone with knowledge of running comps has any helpful information.

I played in a 4bbb open on Thursday. They specifically stated that only one score should be written down. I don't think I've seen that before

I agree with you, it is odd at times and is unlucky if you took the same number of shots but were second in.

Having entered a lot of scores on the computer for 4BBB comps what is usually done is that all the scores for one player are entered and then all the scores for the second player. Having both scores makes no real difference as the software sorts out the better ball except in the current times as said it could make a difference to handicap cuts.

I’ve played opens where we have been expressly told ONLY one score is to be entered per hole, presumably to maintain a decent pace of play. And in Am-Am events, only two scores are to be recorded.

When playing events at my home club it seems to depend on how the competition has been set up on the computer. It seems that, at times, we have to enter the scores for both players, and at times just one per hole.

Not if playing in a team format competition

It’s something lots have done though because the EG app doesn’t know you’re playing in a team comp
I’m confused how some scores can count but others can’t. I imagine advice is given and asked for between members of a pair.

Weird ain't it
How u can't put in a GP whilst playing a pairs/team comp.
Yet
If you play in said event and score on more than 10 or 11 holes, whatever it is, and you're under handicap, then that score is used to give you a cut, or go on your record.

You couldn't make it up

Absolute lunacy

No GP cards because advice may have been given.
But
If you score well after being given advice, then they'll use your scores🤦🤷

Stupid

The other weird thing is you can’t play a ‘normal’ round, score well and then decide to put a card in but you can play well in a 4bbb competition and someone else can decide to put a card in for you - and also make up some of the scores.

Indeed
I know someone who's best round in 12 months is 1 where he was on the card 11 times in a pairs comp
Madness

It was a joke when they decided to use 4BBB scores and as you say “make up” some scores
