Played in the Bank Holiday Pro's Comp this morning. 7/8 handicap stableford from the yellow tees.
I played with a 9 handicapper who shot a gross 67 for 48 points.
Was unbelievable to watch. Shame it wasn't a qualifier.

What scores generally win at your club?
I always feel I need to shoot at least 5 under handicap to have a chance.

7 under won each devision in our May Medal yesterday, wouldn't normally need to be as high as that most times, a four under would usually do it.

Usually 38 or 39 is competitive. Occasionally 40 or 41 but those are pretty rare. 48 is unheard of

Pretty much the same at my old club - though there was a 48 and a 44 by the same guy (off 24 for the first) one year - interspersed with some low-medium 20s. SSS is 35 points off Whites, 36 off Yellows

We had a big 36 holer this weekend and the course was set up just about as tough as it could be.

The winner shot 143 nett (+3) I was still in the top 10 comfortably with +8 nett. Don't usually see too many silly scores at our place apart from the juniors who have been known to put in the occasional 62/63 netts as their improving.

Doesn't that just mean his handicap was wrong?

In the case of our big scorer, it's merely the fact that 310 is a pretty 'normal' drive. Sometimes he has a day when it goes in the right direction. Over 2 years later, he is still of 17 raher than the 12-14 that the scores implied. We would have made a great 4BBB pair as there were 2 or 3 rounds where I had a Stableford score o every hole and only 1 or 2 that weren't '2'!

If you come in with 40 points you are pretty certain of a win (or at least top three). The better ball stableford was only won wuth 43 points yesterday. I know every dog has its day, but 67 off 9 does perhaps ask questions. Seems a big discrepancy between handicap and ability unless it really was one of those days.

Generally at ours you need 40+ to be in the prizes. We have a limited field in comps, and a good number of the higher handicaps have a tendency to avoid medals. I once won a board event with 41, but that is almost unheard of. We have already had one stableford this year where Cat 1's shooting 36 points went up .1.

Medals? Generally something around a nett 66/67 (against a par 72 and SSS 71 off the whites) will be good enough to win.

You normally have to be 40+ to be I'm wit a shot unless the wind is right up. 38 doesn't get a top three sniff.

Our spring meeting was won with net 65/66 on both days, given that par is 72.....

Last season when off 20 Had a gross 81, in a stableford for 47 points. Everything went right that day :P

So I know i've got the potential to get to my target of 14 this year. Just need to work on consistence.
