2nd shot into a par 5

Way too tempting for me. Would go for a smooth 4 wood to attack the green or 21° hybrid and a pitch/chip.. Depends heavily on conditions (wind etc) and the lie.

5 iron straight at the flag... albatross ;)

come on, say what you really mean :)

the original post is a good one because it focuses on the simplicity rather than the minutiae of the actual decision making process we should all take.

unfortunately it also crosses over with the bigger question of why are we playing at that point; and even what constitutes success/fun! for some it will be a swish and potential bragging rights - no downside in sight. for others it will be constructive thinking, execution and, inevitably, the one putt 4 that goes with it :fore:

I took it one stage further in BB matches last week where my hole plan all the way from the tee was dictated by the approach shot to the green (rather than the driving area etc). 4h/8i/9i in one case 3h/7i/pw in the other different courses, giving shots in both cases - winning the hole in both cases.

sitting well its a 3 iron (taking into account what this danger is ) , bunkers ? rip it all day , water or OOB depeneds on how shot looks & feels to the eye at the time .. if ive loosened up properly id prob have a go

not so good it 54* (120 yards )/54* (120 yards) putt for birdie

I thought this was a big hitters forum!?

230 yards with a 3 wood doesn't equate to the usual weapon waving that goes on

I'd probably go for it.

It's the FIRST hole.... you've hit a good tee shot and you've 230 to the front edge (245 flag) ...is it out with the big club and go for the green or do you go (something like) 7-iron then wedge?

(Danger is 30yds left and 20yds right)

Put it another way , you see a nice lady looking at you from across the room , do you get closer and hope she comes to you or do you just go for it , go for it everytime mate , golf wise yeah if its very late in the round and you have a good score and there is danger i always go for a good lay up , putt for birdie and accept par but take bogey or worse out of play

230 off the fairway is too far for me but scale it back to my 3 wood distance and I'd go for it every time.

TBH even at 230 I'd probably still hit 3 wood to get as close to the green as possible. Unless there was tricky bunkering around it in which case I'd maybe make sure not to reach those.

The way you were dirvng yesterday t would be a very long par 5 for you to have 230 left ;)

I would almost always go for it however at 230 I would hit my 3 wood hoping to leave a pitch, and if I didn't hit it cleanly I should still be in range with my 3rd.

depends how my ball was lying, the weather, and how bad the danger was left and right, what was riding on the shot, how well I was playing , etc, etc.

Most times though I would look to get home with the 3 wood.

Our 1st is a par 5 and a very good tee shot off yellows will leave 230yds, But I rarely play for the green. Too much trouble if shot pushed or pulled as you play through a gap between high and deep stands of mature trees - so easy to leave in trees. And deep and difficult front left and right bunkers. Plus as swales in front of green tend to throw a rolling ball into the bunkers you really have to carry it all the way on or trust in luck. I'll usually just lay up for a GW.

Difficult to say given the amount of information in the OP. If the trouble is bunkers then yes, go for it every time. OOB or water then I would have to consider other factors like how generous is the layup area, wind, size of green etc etc. But generally speaking, 230 is in range for me so would seriously consider going for it.

What's the worst that could happen

Bunkers in the way is not a problem but water and OB are a different matter as you say
