2nd shot into a par 5

Our course starts with a Par 5, and it is pretty straight , but it's also uphill and usually into the wind, so from 230 out I must have hit a great drive (or of the wind is behind then a terrible one) but as it's uphill there is usually other considerations too like the wind direction. It's a tight entrance to the green too (bunker at the front either side), so 80% of the time I would hit an easier 6/7 iron to leave myself a short pitch.

or...you think Irony is like woody or metaly ;)

230 yards is a long way for a 5 iron but on a firm links course its not , links golf with no wind is a easy game , you can run the ball for miles , just avoid the bunkers as they are deep , well the last links i played was formby links and played to 5 easy with a 1/2 set

Speak for your self, bunkers are a massive problem :P

You not still having trouble with bunkers simon , you a lot better now then when we 1st played together , me i am doing the chilli dip now and again with my chipping , need to work on not letting my wrist breakdown

I have next to no chance in reaching the green with anything less than a perfect, Sunday Best 3 wood with all conditions in my favour. Just because that is the reality of the situation does not mean that I do not stand over the ball every time thinking I can make it. So, it is 3 wood every time for me.

Have a rip with a 3 Hybrid - just about on the limit for it

Big difference between 230 carry into a receptive green and 230 in current conditions. Would probably be a hybrid if all carry though id prefer to be hitting 3 iron that early in the round. Our first is a par 5 and can often have 230 left in, in current conditions Id be hitting nowhere near as much club though

5 or even 6 iron into your first

In current conditions I'd hit 3 iron and try to roll it on. When it's a bit softer try and carry a 5 wood there. No point laying up with no real danger. Fortune favours the brave.

Saturday roll up and I'll have a pop every time from that sort of range and the fairway. Monthly stableford and I'd still be tempted on the assumption I get a shot (SI????). Medal will be lay up to 80 yards to leave a 52 degree wedge. Matchplay singles and it depends. If my opponent goes first and misses or lays up I'll try and lay a marker down and have a go. If they hit (assuming no shots) then I'll have a go. If I'm playing first I would actually switch it round, lay up and call their bluff depeding on where they are. In better ball, the chances of Hawkeye and I both hitting the fiarway are remote but assuming we had I'd trust him more to hit it straighter and leave it up to him. I'd be laying up to wedge distance

with the next shot that's coming up that you describe, there is very little trouble around the green, no mention of trouble to the front or the back, just trouble a good ways left or right, 60 feet or 40 feet respectively, both a good ways off line.

so any slight miss front of back should have a reasonable chip to still get down in two. no real penalty for slight miss left or right still looking to get down in 2. looking at that what's described for the second shot in, it's more a 'green light' situation.

so not that far left into the green, depending on lie, wind conditions - I'd either hit a slight cut to take a little off it with hybrid or 2i, looking at it coming down at around 235. or look to hit a harder draw into the front of the green with 4i & run it up.

I'm gonna have a bash at that this weekend

Always hit driver/ping rapture (whichever is in the bag on the day) then 3/5 wood

Never really considered hitting a driver then 6/7 then PW etc

It's the FIRST hole.... you've hit a good tee shot and you've 230 to the front edge (245 flag) ...is it out with the big club and go for the green or do you go (something like) 7-iron then wedge?

(Danger is 30yds left and 20yds right)

I'd already be on the green...

Depends on how well I have been hitting it that week... The new me should pull out a 7iron everytime though

Very much depends on the wedge shot a lay up would leave for me. Im pants at getting a ball to hold a green with little run out so if a pitch and run is not on offer I'll crack a 3 wood and hope to get close for a chip/putt.

If i had a score going and the trouble left and right was oob id forget the 3 wood regardless.
