It's the FIRST hole.... you've hit a good tee shot and you've 230 to the front edge (245 flag) ...is it out with the big club and go for the green or do you go (something like) 7-iron then wedge?

(Danger is 30yds left and 20yds right)

i love hitting my MP-H4 hybrids and 230 is spot on for the 2i so I would hit that and take it from there. Going 7i wedge really isn't in my head, unless there is some real danger down near the green. But if I was going on the sensible side then a 5i to leave a nice little pitch shot into the green with my GW.

Depends how it was sitting on the fairway.
Fluffy lie and it would be with the 3 wood.
Bit tighter, and the 5 wood would be making an appearance.
I would then chip out sideways from the danger that was 30 yards left.

Until I had a playing lesson last week it would be a 3 wood or hybrid mostly. Now it may well be 8 iron & wedge.

That pretty much describes the first hole at my home club, Wynyard. A duffed 3 wood usually leaves a short iron anyway. However, the last 4 rounds read 8,4,8,4. The 8's were pretty much the first 8's I've had since the old king died.

I'll carry on using the 3 wood.

Medal or Stableford..?
Makes a difference to me.
In a Stableford I'd probably go for it but in a Medal I'd probably lay up to 100 yards or so....

Got to agree with Chris, I've started playing all of our par 5's as driver, mid to long iron, which then leaves 8-w in and if we take this weekend as an example, I pared all 4 of the par 5's.

I find hitting massive clubs from 230/220 out brings more danger into play than it takes out, so now it's normally driver, 5/6/7i then 8/9/pw and walk off with par. A lot of times I'm still within 10-15ft with a birdie putt as the first putt anyway,,,

I gave my answer but have to say. I had the playing lesson last Friday and my pro said that the benefit of playing boring golf was that, if I laid to the same distance each time I would be forever using the same distance of wedge and should get really good with it rather than having different short wedge shots from all different places near the green, or be oob etc etc

The very next morning we played it as our last hole in a 4bbb and we were one down. I hit a straight drive and whamoo'd my 3 wood over the trees ( slight dog leg) to 20 yards from the green, a little chip and a nice birdie to save the game!

Well, needs must ...... and all that!

4 hybrid then the full pitch in maybe even my 9I

No need for a bigger club as it still wouldn't get there so all I'd be doing is making the pitch shorter but risking the danger areas

on any par 5 im highly unlikely to be able to hit the green in 2

Therefore my aim for the second shot is to get within 100-130 yards so my third shot has a chance of a green in regulation

If a good 3rd shot results in a bird, Mega happy days, if it results in a 2 putt par, happy days, TBH im happy with a 6/2

Im easy to please :)

I think that sums up the correct approach. If you can't reach anyway, then you might as well just take the risk factor out and lay up to about 70/80 yards with a mid iron. I like to look at shots on a risk reward scale. If you can't reach anyway then there is no reward in taking out a 3w, as you are still only going to leave wedge in anyway, so take a club that is more or Less guaranteed to be on the fairway like a 6i etc, then knock it on with a wedge. 2 putts, easy par, thanks very much....

230 is normally out of my range. However, you could be talking about the 1st at Mill Ride which, if I got that close with the tee shot, I'd always go with the 3-wood.

Plenty of other options and holes where that's the distance/decision/challenge - West Course 13th, Walton Heath Old 6th

So I'd either consider 9i*2 , 8i, 10:30 Wedge. 6i, 9:00 Wedge of Rescue and GW all depending on what else is about.

I like the idea of hitting 2 half distance clubs as there's little pressure on the first and confidence about distance for the 2nd. 100yds is actually one of my confident distances though, as is 80.

Btw. That 'distance left' is actually the distance you could be faced for the tee shot on the 1st at a couple of courses - Walton Heath Old (though it normally plays shorter) and, apparently, Royal Ascot! I'd also consider an 'easy' Driver on both of those, as I do on 3 of the Par 3s at The Shire off the back tees.

Definitely lay up for me not even considering my 3 wood. 230 to go so a nice smooth 5 Iron to leave about 70 yards for my favourite wedge distance. Should have a good look at a birdie putt from there, par at worst so takes bogey and double bogey out of the equation.

*EDIT* I don't even carry a 3 wood anymore haha so definitely not an option...probably why I dropped it for an extra wedge.

230 a bit far for my bag too but if the green was reachable it would be all about the lie and the extent/likely impact of the trouble. Our first is a 421 par 4 but the shape of the land and OB down the left invariably leaves a similar shot choice (180-200 uphill with OB left). Nothing better than flushing one onto the green but nothing worse than pulling one out. 6/7 iron to 30/40 yards short is usually the best choice in a medal.
