Quick review of My Golf Year as I approach my 50th Birthday (27th Dec)

Its been mixed

Started the year on 22.3 and steadily gone up to 22.9....Not so good

Putting has improved loads, regularly post 33 or 34 putts a round, virtually eliminated the dreaded 3 putt, but still puts in the odd appearance.

im now settled with the new stance, grip etc that ive been working on all year

Ive found a 5 wood (Cobra Rail Baffler) that I can hit

My Biggest problem is that I try to hit the ball too hard, this leads to duffs and increased the pressure on the next shot. which then stands a higher chance of another duff.

I still have never hit a Blob free Round
My Best score was 89 and my worst 100, average 94

Today was a typical round 97 shots, 32 points, 2 Proper Birdies,2 net birdies, 2 pars, 4 net pars,4 bogeys, 4 blobs Those 4 blobs totaled 30 shots ( should have been 20 shots)

Moments of really good golf, combined with rubbish

So its been a mixed year....So what does 2012 bring

I have a few aims

1 To Record a Blob Free round
2 Stop throwing away silly shots
3 Get my handicap down towards 18

To do this all I need to do is knock 6 or 7 shots off my score on a regular basis

Simples

Mine is just to play better golf - sounds stupid, but I'd just like to see an improvement, any improvement, over this year. Obviously the testament of this will be a decrease in handicap. Would love to get to 15 or below this year.

Had a pretty terrible year this year. Started off promising, then discovered the loop in my swing and my long game all but fell apart for most of the year and all confidence with the long sticks was shattered. Didn't get to play as much as I'd have liked either, which meant not enough practice.

Luckily, my short game improved as the year went on and after the revelation 9 iron-feet together-grip down pitch shot that Bob showed me, I didn't look back and the back end of the season saw my short game vastly improve.

If I can get some sort of long game back and continue to be average to above average on my short game, I should reach my goals.

Range sessions with a 7 iron over the last few weeks have helped, more of the same will continue using the tried and tested headcover/sponge/bottle drill to force my swing to come from the inside. Coupled with tour tempo should help my riddum. This will continue as much as I can until next Feb-ish when the weather gets better and we'll see how it goes.

Whatever happens, there's some great forum meets next year which I'll enjoy regardless of how badly I'm hacking the ball.

Good luck
Finding a good 5 wood should help, ive just popped one into my bag,
really easy to hit, a life saver for long approaches

How do uou plan to knock 7 shots off? lessons perhaps

2012 is going to be my first year starting with an official handicap
im going to aim for single figures, only putting in cards from medal play only off the long tees should be fun :)

Joined my new club in August after a couple of years off golf, and got first handicap there of 9 with three cards of 80, 80, 81. In truth each of those could have been lower, but a couple of poor holes on each let me down. Frustrating but at least I know the lower scoring capability is basically there.

Target for 2012 is to continue on stack and tilt :whoo: to give me a much more consistent swing and shot shape. Then loads of work on the short game, and pitching from 100yds and in, should make a push towards 6/7 hcp achieveable. But I'm not aiming for that as a specific target... a lower hcp will be a by-product fo a better all round game.

To everyone here, hope you get what you want from golf in 2012.

My Biggest problem is that I try to hit the ball too hard - Understatement Alert!

Never a truer word Bro.

I lost count of the number of times your swing speed would have put Timmy to shame.
And as you saw, when you slow it down and let the shaft do the work, the ball flies.....
Easier said I know...

Personally, my aims for next year are to try and stay Cat 1, try to play decent golf, but above all to enjoy it.

This year saw 115 rounds (prob no more this year now), Stroke ave of 78, 2 under par rounds, 1 level par round, 137 birdies and nearly 1200 holes of par or better. The handicap dropped from 9.2 to 4.7 (now 5) and I'm without doubt playing the best I have ever played.

A good year.

I must bring out the utter worst in you then - every round you've played with me has had you hacking like a right knob! :D

Thats some year Ian, well done mate.

For me Ive come down from a generous re-entry level of 10.0 to 6.7 which currently feels about right. Certainly room for improvement there, especially in the short game and even more urgently distance control and the target is cat 1 in the summer as early as posible.

That said, the main target remains staying injury free (the knee seems to be holding) and get to play as many different tracks as possible

I've only been playing seriously for 6 months and have gone down from 36 to 23 so quite an achievement for me. I shot my best round ever (17 over gross) and recorded my first eagle a couple of weeks ago. Has been going downhill since last week, but I'm still very happy with my golf. My aim for next year is to get down to 15. May sound a bit steep, but a 10 week holiday after GCSE's? Anything is possible ;)

2012 can only be better first time i have ended a season higher than i started getting the full 2 shots back this year. Just cannot manage 18 good holes had 36 points for 15 holes twice and played well in the 4ball comps.

Ally, you will never have a better chance to meet your target next year. You really can do it. At your age, I made really rapid progress handicap wise. Mates of the same age were going from 20+ to single figures in the space of a year... all that time off school means you can practice and play every day for weeks on end... you lucky so and so!

You can do it... the sky's the limit at your age. Good luck.

2011 has been the best year of golf I have ever had.

I started off the year on 10 and have got my self down to 8 (7.5 to be exact). This is down to playing much more consistant golf! My putting has come on leaps and bounds, the 3 putt is almost non existant!

The only downside has been my driving and this is what I really need to work on. Hitting fairways and more GIRs. Those 2 stats have let me down as my Irons, Short Game and Putting have been the areas where I have been able to salvage rounds with poor drives!

Also got the Trilby Tour to look forward, I'm going to be putting a lot of preperation in to this to make sure I am on top of my game!
