Played a practice inter club 4somes match today, any handicap combo but 14 is the lowest the total can be .. played away , only 12 holes open due to the weather , Playing against 2 nice guys it was a friendly affair . about the 5th we got chatting bout handicaps they had a 5 & 12 handicap we were both 7 ( last years lowest )

Turns out their 12 was a 2 handicapper 5 years ago . got fed up by being trounced by higher handicappers so constructed a higher handicap , told us he left his old club after a row , he would go out a shot or 2 & club would cut him.

It was the matter of fact way he spoke of it that bugged me most tho , seemed proud of it. as a guy who dreads .1's TBH I was a fair bit peeved off over it .. Im fair sure if it had been a real game , win or lose I wouldn't have sat down for the after match dinner with him .. which is a pity because he , they both were lovely company on the course

For some reason I seem to hear about far more jiggery-pokery with Irish handicaps than elsewhere! Not that such activity is limited to Ireland.

Could it be something to do with considerably valuable prizes being offered in Am tournaments? An Irish work colleague (while working in Scotland in 2000-2002) certainly believed there was a significant 'shamateur' problem!

A player's handicap could be suspended if there was evidence of him managing it up, or that used to be in the rules.

Not as low as your guy, but there is a guy at a local club in inverness, that went from 5 to 10 or 11 in the space of a year.

he had prev won his clubs champs on a few occasions. Heard he got cut in something and he disagreed with it so went out in 3 comps a week and the odd open. He has won the handicap section of the North Alliance a few times and reg trawls the sweep money for each round. One of the guys i used to play with, had to stop playing in his group ( 4 balls from each club play together in each round) and he felt embarrassed by association.

What bothers me about it mate that even in my own club its not dealt with enough , listening to the guy today it seems his old club were trying to stifle his attempts so he left , he admitted it as readily as that aswell .. I was disgusted but astounded by the total lack of him seeing what he is/was doing is cheating ,, im trying my best to get to cat 1 for even 1 day ha

Would report him to the local authority and have his HC suspended

Sad that anyone feels the need to go to those lengths to win matches and feel they are being competitive. I'd definitely not socialised after had it been the match for real and I concur with others that reporting him seems a sensible move, if only to prevent other golfers getting duped against this guy

Yes, as he's such a massive CHEAT, I agree wholeheartedly with the above

Tell ya the truth guys I just don't need the grief or hassel of it , our club cant even take the high moral ground on this as there a few there aswell . I have never met anyone so openly proud of it & thinking it was ok before tho..
He actually seemed to think he was going to hurt his old club by leaving , id say they were delighted

The old system allowed him to do this tho , hopefully the new changes will prevent some of this ..

If it's as bad as you describe in the Emerald Isle then I'd hate to have to play there, at least in opens and KO comps, I'd always be trying to work out what the oppo's proper handicap was.

I think I'd limit my competitive golf to club comps.

At one point in my golfing life I went up from 13.2 to 18.5 (playing handicap 19) over about a 4 year period, but that was for genuine reasons. I developed those two golfing horrors the shanks and the yips. No handicap reviews or anything, my handicap just kept going up 0.1 at a time. Once I retired, I was able to put more time into my golf and found a new way of putting, and got my handicap down to as low as 10.2 at one point, but going up again now due to old age. :(

What has the local authority (in my case Runneymede Borough Council) got to do with it?

Do you mean Area Authority?

If you are a Handicap Secretary/Chairman, the proper names of the appropriate authorities are facts that you should know!

If im honest id say there are a few in most clubs , I think clubs are afraid of legal action , there was one high profile case over here 2 yr ago that went to high court , club won .. if anyone ever wins in them cases

Christ on a bike, don't be so pedantic! We all know what he meant. Why do you have to pick holes in so many people's posts? That simply can't be enjoyable! Lighten up, you'll enjoy the ride more 😃
