2 to 12 in 5 years & proud of it..WOW!

To most golfers a 2 handicap means they have almost got to scratch
I cannot pretend to understand the mentality

CHEAT
DICK
etc

Anyone that has ever played off 2 should never be allowed more than single figures unless they lose an arm and even then it's generous.

What has the local authority (in my case Runneymede Borough Council) got to do with it?Do you mean Area Authority? If you are a Handicap Secretary/Chairman, the proper names of the appropriate authorities are facts that you should know!
Belter.......

i don't know about that what about age?

One of my mates dads is now off 7 was off scratch in his day, but he's mid 70's now and has lost a lot yards esp with the driver and woods.

I went from 9 to 14 in 4 years, nearly gave up as i hated going out as in my head it was a guaranteed 0.1, nowt to do with being a bandit just lost confidence in my ability.

The Op does not offer a view as to whether he playes like a 12 or a 2.

That said Clubs out here and in Spain run the USGA system with handicap index and slopes etc. We had a load of people taking the p1ss and so now comps are done with 3/4 difference on the handicap index and not slope adjustments which does give a small advantage to the lower handicaps. This was done for the very reason that the low handicappers were fed up with people of high handicaps winning everything.

Not convinced that is the answer as its just an attempt to work around the issue instead of dealing with it straight on. If clubs took a more aggressive approach then perhaps people would stop doing it.

However blatant handicap fraud will remain as long as there are unscrupulous people with no regard to integrity and honesty.

I was accused (jokingly but pointed) of being a bandit off 12 about six weeks ago. I was winning a lot of money but I had found something in my game that made a step change in scoring....I did enter all my scores into the system and I've come down from 12 (11.6) to 9.1 in about 4 weeks. Which is only 8 games. I knew the way I was playing was not reflected in the handicap and did feel a bit guilty...

The system here allows you to register a game and then enter wither a tournament score or general (bounce) game into the system. This means that all your play is monitored and tracked. The flaw is that the bounce games are voluntary...

I'm not supprised you were called a bandit off 12 six weeks ago, your sig says you were off 10:rofl:

That pretty much reinforces my idea. Off 9 by his mid 80s.

I suppose its case some will always abuse the system. some the other way, a few of the old boys who play in our roll up don't play as many comps as they should as they don't want their handicap to go up. My neighbor is off 9 now he' only plays the min amount, as he does not want to not be off single fig. he should prob be off 12

We have a young guy, early 20's, who left us in 2013 with a handicap of 7. Didn't play for a year or so, joined another club, put three cards in May 2015 and was awarded 16. Rejoined us (we are now his away club) late last year. Some members are, shall we say, a little unhappy!

Chair of our handicap committee rang the other club to ask if they were aware of his previous history. Apparently they were, and thought that his short time not playing warranted an increase of 9 shots. Truly unbelievable.

At most clubs, certainly ours the most he would get providing he still had two arms and two legs would be about 9. We had a case of a guy leaving (off 4) returning a few years later after a spell abroad as a tennis coach winning our major open off 9 with a handicap gained from the local "hotel course", renowned for being let's say liberal with new allocations....like you say, unbelievable!

Ignoring the original guy who sounds like is doing naughties.

I agree with what you say, ignoring if someone has a bad case of yips/shanks.

I used to play to single figures regularly, when I played almost weekly about 12 years ago for a couple of years, I used to blow really hot and cold tho. I could shot around par(did have a couple of rounds under par,on the short upper course at Hainault forest) or certainly in the 70s and then the following day shot high 80s plus !!, due to my swing is pants and it all about timing/short game. That said in competitions never got into a single figure handicap, as never scored well in them but social games with friends I used to play to a different handicap(much prefer the social games than comps tbh, as more relaxing and fun).

Then basically stopped playing for about 10 years(apart from about 2-3 times a year due to work/moving commitments).

When I used to play those 2-3 times, I never knew what my shooting would be, a couple of times over the ten years I managed to go round in the high 70s/low eighties but normally my score was a lot worse.

But the one thing that I felt I never lost was the ability to score low on open or short courses, even though my scores was saying otherwise and my short game was pants when compared back. Now coming back to the game, over the last 8 months and playing 18 holes probably every 2 weeks, I am all over the place and still not playing 18 holes well, loosing balls, missing short puts, duffing chips, fat shots, thins, slice ball 50 yards etc.

So do agree with you, certainly they will keep the ability on their day.

Sorry warbled on there:o

I mentioned this in another blog a few months ago about a family I know of hcaps are "iffy" and was disappointed with some of the responses, however what I cannot understand is that these people find playing partners.
What does that say about them ?

I can understand the chaps plight by being annoyed at struggling against higher caps' but it does come under rule 35-1b "Tough-titty, sunshine, them's the rules". Whilst he may have thought about getting his handicap up a bit, it should have been filed under 'things to keep to myself and not say out loud' - speaks volumes about him. Abhorrent.
