15 yards to the pin... how do you get it there?

As it says you're 15 or so yards away from the hole, you're off the green, putting not on option as fringe is not cut to fairway length, no seriously hazards and you have some green to work with

What is your preferred club & shot?

Its a shot I face very often out on the course & I ask because I've been spending time with my PW (for me that's 48 degree) working on a nice putting stroke to deliver a little bit of air (maybe 3ft high) to just under halfway and run the other half... but I bump into a guy at the practice area a couple of times now who seems to prefer a half shot with a 60 degree with face wide open from the same lie looking to stop it dead

Whatever works for each is the best of course but interested in how others approach the shot

It would depend on the lie, whether the green is above or below me, whether the green slopes towards or away from me, how firm the green is, how much rough I am going over before I reach the green. It could be anything from a hybrid to a 58 deg wedge.

This time last year I would have used my 60 degree and try to land it next to the pin and then wonder how I ended up taking a double.

I now take my 52 and life is much better, particularly now I have my chipping / pitching technique down.

8 / 9 iron for me, putting stroke, as you said, get it a bit airborne and run the rest of the way. I have seen people practicing as the guy you saw was, but for me, you have to be very confident to be putting serious height on the ball with that short distance!

I used to try using a wedge to get it high, and got quite good with it for a while, but the practice ground I used isn't big enough so I stopped practicing and couldn't do it well now!

Which ever way I choose im looking to land it on the green and let it run out.
It will always depend on how much green I have to work with.
I sometimes use my 58 especially if its uphill to the flag, generally looking
to land it close as it wont run much at all.

If I'm on a similar level to the green I'll bump an 8-iron, if the green is above me I'll fluff a wedge a little closer so that I can bump an 8-iron, if its below me I'll thin a wedge and try to hole the 40-footer coming back!

Saying that if Sunday is anything to go by it doesn't matter what club I use I'll stick it inside 3 feet (think positive damn you)!

In all seriousness I'd try to keep the ball as low as is practical, giving the ball more air than necessary is adding an extra variable to the equation.

That used to be my best shot, holed quite a few in my time. On one occasion three in a scratch league game [they were not happy].
Wee choked down shut face 8 iron, generally pitch a third to the hole and run out the rest.

Long as the lie is ok, 56 or 60 degree wedge off the back foot. Looking to flight it quite low land it just on the green, two bounces and it should grab near the hole. Quiet expletive under breath if not. If it's links golf, 8 iron towards back foot and run in all day long.

One of my regular playing partners putts it with a hybrid to great effect. Seen him use it from all sorts of positions, and distances. Almost always a 1 putt tap in afterwards. He recently bought the hybrid, never had one before.
It's so effective I keep threatening to steal/snap it. He's deadly with it. He's off 5.

It's so effective I've started doing it and whilst not as adept as him I have seen some benefits.

That's the key for me. In theory, I'd go with the 54*, fly it to the green and let it check on the second bounce before rolling out a bit.

In reality, I'd chunk the first one a few inches ahead of myself, then blade the next one 20 ft past the hole, then 3 putt.

so would I in real life, but this is forum golf where I can actually chip :D
