the two things are intertwined, drop the prices down to what you pay up north and demand would go through the roof, most of the prices arent much different to guest rates at a lot of the courses so dont get that much interest.

you only have to look at those that are priced well below guest rates and demand rises greatly
 
£25 for visitors (cheap compared with green fee but pretty expensive for an Open up here) £15 for members. I am playing this year.

Most opens around here are £12 - £15.

Have applied for Royal Aberdeen this year at £50 but I am very keen to play the course.

I understand that it maximises income and lets visitors to see the course but to prevent members access to THEIR course for a day, and the chance of a good prize, seems wrong to me.

Fortunately we have two courses so members are not inconvenienced unduly, we also have plenty of comps.

Surely its fairer to visiting golfers if host club members don't play, unless there are separate prizes. I'd say that at my club home golfers would have a distinct advantage in terms of local knowledge.

Not sure where you are in the country, but where I am it's not only unusual but unheard of!!

I'm playing over 20 opens all over the country this year and every single one is open to the members of the host club as well as visitors.

I'm in Cambridgeshire and in this region its very much the norm in my experience. If its good enough for clubs like Woburn and Woodhall Spa then its good enough for me.

As I said above, there may be one somewhere but I've never heard of a single instance of that up here in Scotland. Most opens, especially at the better courses, have a large number of their members taking part.

The Royal Aberdeen open is good value at £50, we've been up 3 times but sadly can't make it this year

We are hosting the Jamega tour again this year and for the first time we're having a pro-am the day before. Good idea in theory and allows the pros a chance to play the course etc but they want £90 for members. They're having a laugh and not a chance I or indeed most of our members will be entering that. It's significantly more for non-members and while I'm fiercely loyal about the club even I can't justify this and as much as the course is coming on there's no way it's worth more than playing many top 100 courses as a green fee.

In my 15 years or so of membership I've never been aware of any of our members having a problem with it. Its never been raised as an issue at any AGM.

As I've already said its common practice in these parts - I'm signed up to play opens at Wellingborough, Sheringham and Woodhall Spa so far this year and there'll not be any host club members playing in any of them.
 
Wouldn't pay to play in our opens.
I play at colleagues clubs open once a year. Sort of a work bragging rights affair.
Other than that, tend to avoid opens anyway as I don't like team games and nobody seems to do an individual open.
