Choose Your Tee Markers?

The question really goes to all those who think everyone should be able to play whatever tees they choose.

If the work can/should be done then the cost will be met by whoever meets costs for all other course maintenance & improvement work. Whether that's enlarging a prepared teeing area, changing sand in a bunker, cutting 2nd rough, improving drainage etc etc

In most cases I guess that'll be members (via subs fees) and visitors via (green fees)

Genuinely though, it's not the golfers' problem is it? Clubs have to budget accordingly. Why should it be more expensive if a few more people play off the whites? More traffic there means less traffic on the yellows doesn't it?

Make the tee longer, 120 from the back 90 from the front - a tee 30 yards long by 5 yards wide should be fine to accommodate the three tee seta,
This isn't possible due to the land - and who wants a 70 yard par 3 from the front tee to a front pin?

And I love people who think they can solve the problem without even knowing the full layout of the ground ;)

I played at a par 3 at away course on Saturday with an (insured) hole in one comp, so they had the white/yellow & red markers all together. That’s what made me think it may work on permanent basis specifically where the prepared area space is limited and its impacting what markers can be used on any given day
120 yards isn’t too big/small for any of the tee options on a par 3 so it should work fine with the +/- 10 yards too

It is a problem for entitled golfers who demand to play from tees that are not open for general use. Thankfully they are in a very small minority.

Moving traffic from the yellow tees to the white tees requires a proportionate area of land to accommodate the increased traffic there.

So there is enough land there for the whole club to use the tee on a comp

But not enough land for the tee to be used by handful when wanting to submit a card of those tees

80% of weekend comps, and all midweek comps, are played from the yellow tees.
The white tees are used for comps twice a month on average (monthly medal & trophy comps), and for men's (not seniors) team & (some) knockout matches.

So your average member can play the white twice a month - that’s all 🤷‍♂️

That’s not great

There should be no reason the tee shouldn’t be open for members to decide if they want to put a card in on that tee instead of two twice a month

The level of usage won’t be significantly more

It's a problem for golf clubs who treat visitors with disdain and don't offer the product that has been sold.

In the winter a lot of our tees will have the yellow and white markers at the same point to give the competition tees a rest although it does put more pressure on the tee of the day which is why I can understand the club looking at mats

Sensible. But let’s not bring winter golf into the equation and confuse the argument about choice of tee.
