All holes are rated individually from each tee, so producing composite ratings is quite straightforward. However, allowing free rein for club, or players, to pick and choose on each hole day-to-day would be absolute chaos.
No you would do it by using the same tee markers .. so put all the reds at the furthest distance for the lady’s medal and watch the carnage 🤣

I am no longer on the committee so have no way of pushing for it, it was hard to get the reds rated for men. Our rating was done only about 2 years before the WHS so it is probably a long time before we get re-rated and about the only other reason for it is because we are relocating quite a few bunkers but that is a multi year project.
Yeovil Old is due to be rated in 2029

Never understood members tees, seems a bit pretentious to me. Do these players have also have separate bar areas, locker rooms or car park ( seen this before) for members and visitors? Also, what tees do members guests play from?
I thought if you paid a green fee you were a temporary member for the day / round?

Not at some places:-
no you can’t play off those tees, they’re for members
no you can’t park there, members only,
no your changing room is over there, the small one.
no, that’s the members bar, you’ve got to sit over there.

Sad but true in some cases.

I thought that was for legal reasons (from the past), allowed you to buy and drink alcohol at the club. Back when there were licensing hours clubs could sell drinks to members outside of those hours.

Car park and changing rooms I understand and think that's fine. Bar....hmm, not sure. Tees are just weird

Agree with this. I can understand why clubs that receive a lot of visitors want to allow their members easier access to parking spaces and have members lockers in their changing rooms.
I can understand a little if you are a club with huge number of tourists why you might want a quiet bar for members. I can understand why back tees are not always in use but having a totally different set of tees for members is definitely a bit odd.

Our back tees are almost always out so that they are available for use in any knockout matches. It doesn't make them available for general play. All non-competition/match play is from the tees of the day unless granted permission to do otherwise.
“Granted permission”. How archaic. What a quaint little world your committee lives in.

So if a member wants to put a card in the back tees he has to ask permission - that’s not great for WHS is it if your members are only putting in GP on one tee

All the comps are off the back tees at my course, so I’m always going to play from them, even a casual practice round. Little point practising hitting a 6 iron off the tee on a par 3 when in competition it’s nearly always a 4 iron. I’m not aware of any restrictions for visitors.

When visiting another course, my friends and I will decide which tees we want to play, based on difficulty. We will usually pick the back tees, unless it’s a championship course with 7,000+ back markers for elite tournaments. We are sensible enough to recognise that sometimes it is better to play off the yellows. Don’t think I’ve ever seen beginners trying to play off competition tees.

If we have decided to play off the whites, and the club secretary comes rushing out to admonish us on the 1st tee, we would smile graciously, tee off from the yellows, then play from the whites from the 2nd onwards.

I remember we were once paired up with a member, who proudly announced we would be able to play off the whites because we were with him. “Members privilege” he called it. Again just smile graciously, no need to tell him we were going to play off the whites anyway.

So you have little respect for other club's wishes/conventions?

Not quaint at all - just practical. We are not a members club; although we have a members committee, it has no direct input into policy decisions of the owner & course manager.

Many of the back (white) tee boxes are very small and any significant increase in traffic would render them unusable very quickly. It is why we only have men's team & knockout matches and one or two competitions a month between April and October from the back (white) tees. All other comps (we have comps every Saturday and Sunday, plus seniors and ladies comps during the week), and senior matches, are from the tees of the day, i.e. the middle (yellow) tees for men.

So if a member wants to put a card in the back tees he has to ask permission - that’s not great for WHS is it if your members are only putting in GP on one tee
They could ask, but the answer would almost always be no. There is no effect on WHS.

So as a member they are unable to pick which tee they can play off and can only put cards in from the back tees when it’s a comp

I was just looking at my course - I don’t know why after 10 yrs there this has crossed my mind .. guess I am a bit slow!
We have 1 par 5 at 541yards ( so a proper one)
Then we have 5 par 4s over 405 yards , 1 is 439yards and is up hill I think playing 470yards, the other is 432 yards that doglegs around 250-280yards.

Then the rest of the par 4s are around 330-370 yards and small greens.
Then 4 par 3s that range from 110-175yards.

I just realised it’s actually long and perhaps I should be more relaxed about my scoring .. The yellow markers only affect the long holes by 10-15 yards.

Does seem a very selfish attitude. Royal Ascot when they were in the race course were very strict about members only playing off the whites in competitions and if the secretary caught you (he'd often walk his dog on the heath and so would pop up in unexpected points) then you were in deep do do. Fortunately since we moved to our current course the club have been far more relaxed

I think since the advent of WHS, and how we're supposed to put cards in all the time to MyEG, I don't think clubs should be denying access to certain tees. Any half-decent player that comes to my course, if they were forced to play off yellows I think they'd be a bit miffed about how few shots they'd get, and they'd much prefer to put a card in off the whites. Similar to how senior men should be able to play off the reds now, rather than the club looking down on them and saying they are the ladies' tees. Times have moved on, and people should really be able to play any tees appropriate to them, otherwise what was the point of rating all the tees for everybody?
