Your 2016 end of season report.

Well, after two years on the sidelines I finally made it back onto the course this summer. I've played few rounds of social golf over the summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. Having to get to terms with the fact that I cant swing as freely and hit the ball as far with the longer clubs than I used to. It's getting there, but, it'll be a while before I'm happy. Think my competitive golf is behind me, but considering two out of the three surgeons who discussed my treatment were of the opinion I was going to be wheelchair bound for the rest of my days, I'll take what I have and enjoy my golf while I can. Looking forward now and trying to work out my options for next year as I really would like to play a bit more than I have been.

Pretty happy with mine, handicap came down from -54 to -33,5. Still haven't broken 100 yet (which was on my battle board for this season), but managed to do a lot of other things for the first time, like play my first birdie, hit a 200 yard drive and some other small accomplishments. Much happier with my swing than I was at the beginning of the season as well (even though I might still completely lose it during a round, sometimes).
Sounds a very decent season there Capella.

B+ for me, over two shots lower than when i started the season. 2 medal wins. Currently sitting top of the medal masters. Touched 10 for the first time and now feel that single figures is a possibility for the first time ever. Lost in the singles matchplay quarter finals on the 20th to the guy that won it and lost in the foursomes knockout 3rd round to the pair that won it. One more qualifying medal this Saturday comingand i'm going to try my bits off to get cut !!!

is it the Yonex clubs that turned your game around Andy?

They've certainly helped Bill although I'm still tinkering with my bag all the time !!!!!! In the main though I think i've finally got round to understanding what i can and can't do on the golf course and am managing my game better.

its definitely two shots per round having good course management and knowing your own game.
keep it up mate you will soon hit the fabled single digit.

Roller coaster for me. Started off 5hc, up to 6, then back to 5 again. At 64 years young I suppose that's not bad. Sometimes I feel like giving up other times I love the game. Funny enough, I'm putting better than ever, 25 putts in the medal yesterday. Eleven single putts and seven 2 putts. My last medal at Dunbar also saw me birdie all three par fives yet I let a good score slip finishing with 75 gross CSS 72.

A year passes, the game still blows hot and cold. Have had so much fun this year, taking on carrys and 2nd shots to par 5, that I have never been able before.

Submitted 3 cards and got allocated a 10 handicap, went upto 10.4 thinking next comp would go upto 11, but then shot my lowest comp score ever of 75 and got cut to 9.4. I can feel a really good round coming, shame the rain has soften up the course and winter is coming, maybe next year for that low round..

Started my second season this year on 25 with the aim of getting down to 18. End the year on 25 (just one qualifier left), although hit my lowest score of 90 just eight days ago, and followed that up with a dreadful 116 in an open on Friday where I seemed to have forgotten how to hit the ball. Its the inconsistency that's killing my scores and I need to spend more time practicing. Looks like the 18 will be postponed for a year.

Interesting year, started at 14.2, went all the way up to 15.7 and am currently at 12.0.

Made redundant end of January so played a lot more golf (though now working 2 days a week by choice), had some lessons straight away with pro I have used on and off for years but golf just got worse and worse.

Went to a different pro with trackman, pressure mats all the tech out of curiosity in June for a couple of lessons.

Something just clicked, broke 80 for the first time straight after second lesson (he told me I should be embarrassed to play off 16 !!) and have now done it several times including a medal (net 64), managed 7 cuts in handicap since June, got as far as semi final of club singles etc.

What looked like a disaster and had me ready to hang up the golf bag has turned right around.

I am hoping to get to my lowest handicap ever soon (played off 11.4 once a few years ago) though aspects of the game still need a lot if improvement.

Been a good year which had me near to quitting at one point - there is always hope.

Must go book a couple of follow up lessons !

Well done. We should bookmark this post and throw it in the face of all the "lessons won't help your game"-doubters.

Picked up the clubs again after a 10 year abscence, old gear was seriously in tatters so bought a few bits and bobs.

Handicap has picked up from where I left off at 14 and after a comp a couple of weeks ago Im down to 13.9

Best round of the season was an 81, worst was somewhere around 92 or 93, best front 9 on the home track was 37 (+1), best back 9 40 (+4)

Single figures is in there somewhere but I just never seem to be able to put it all together in the same round. Ive had great rounds where my driving was poor but everything else made up for it and vice versa.

Consistently inconsistent

Played a lot less club matches this year
Won 14, Lost 5, Halved 3
Pretty consistent % for the last 3 years so I guess the school report is 'more of the same'

I've never seen any of those posts and if they have been posted then chances are they were by trolls.

Played in "club night" for the first time this season and ended up 7th in Cat 1 (0-14) and won a nice £65 pair of shoes :)

Had my best 9 holes off the yellows shooting 33 (3 under) & shot under 80 (Par 71) quite a few times, again off the yellows.

Competition play was n't quite so strong, played in four Sunday medals and each time improved but also went up 0.1 every time so I'm now off 10.3

I've seen a bit of equipment change over this season too, out with the Titleist Driver and in with a Taylor Made, out with a ping putter and in with an odyssey and last week I upgrade my 10 year old mizuno irons with some ping i's and matching glide wedges. I'm hoping the added forgiveness of these irons plus a couple of lessons over the winter on my diving accuracy can see me return back down to single figures.

If I wrote it out there’s a book’s worth of high’s, low’s and woes that no one would read

I appear to be coming out of a low at the moment that saw me go up from 21 to 22 (not close to getting cut but at least I’m finding buffer again to stop the rot)

My swing could do with an overhaul to maximise what mobility I have (videoed it the other week and my backswing was faster than my downswing!)

Putting is definitely Cat 3 level but I waste too many of my shots reaching the greens (short hitter syndrome) and as the ‘new season’ has just started (one season rolls straight into the next) so at least the chance to get cut is ever-present

Happy with the golf this year although wish I could have played more!

Driver is getting more consistent and I'm playing it with more confidence - 273, 282 and 312 are longest drives so far (Garmin s20) - although it can still stay in the bag for a whole round as I love my Ping Crossover!
Achieved Goal 1 -Keeping a ball for one round! (thanks admittedly to PP who found it in a hedge after a wayward bunker shot!)
Achieved Goal 2 - Qualified for my monthly league final at The Shire
Won the team event at Smiffy's Cooden meet
Finding myself being in a position to putt with a realistic chance of a birdie or par more often than last year
Short game getting better - chipping and putting
Achieved Goal 3 - Break 90 (88)
Found a great coach at East Sussex National - Sarah
Mental side of the game getting better (no equipment broken this year, dented yes, broken no!)
Had a couple of good rounds with a few consecutive pars and even the odd birdy!

Everything leading up well to the two big events for me this year - the Help for Heroes golf day and my final at The Shire

Disappointments:
My Par 3s - I seem to be pulling everything to the left, or if on line, coming up short
Performance in my club comps has not been great due to blowing up at certain stages

Looking forward to next year!

I've just bought a set of Ping i irons and wedges and often hit a 4-iron off the tee on shorted par 4's where the trouble is near the greens - I wondered if this crossover club would suit me as I did try some hybrids but could n't stop hooking them. What crossover do you have and how does it fit in to your club make-up? I carry a 3 wood but hardly ever hit it...
