Exactly that, he is not helping his PP or himself. To be honest, am Suprised that no one has said owt at the club. Feel sorry for the guy/woman but there are others playing.

he might not have been playing that slow, I know that sounds stupid but I've played with low/mid handicappers who take forever on each shot. I recently played golf with a guy from work, he had never been to a course before so we went to the local 9 hole course. he must have been averaging about 8-10 per hole but he wasn't slowing play down, nobody made a big deal out of his score and he really enjoyed himself.

If this guy wasn't slowing play down and enjoying himself I don't see much of a problem. I was blessed that my dad taught me golf when I was younger, when I see people with no golfing experience trying to navigate a course enjoying themselves I have more respect than anything. The initial learning curve of golf is horrendous.

I played in a society last year and there was one score like that out of the group. He only plays three times a year in the work society so only to be expected, but a club member shooting this is horrific. The club Pro should be all over him like a rash.

Had a guy join me for the last seven holes Saturday and he was over 70 for those seven. He was even using a range ball. The best part was when he told me that he ran a society and that our current club wouldn't entertain them (can't imagine why). Then he said they were off to Surrey National instead. God help anyone else on that course that day.

Worst medal score ever has to be that of Mrs J F Meehan, and she wasn't even a beginner. Back in 1913 she managed to score 161 (or 166, depending on which account you read) on a single hole - which means her total for the round had to be at least 220. Google her name and you'll find plenty of links that will supply the gory details.

Not necessarily. He might have had 9 pars on the front 9 (8 of them with 2 shots) and the rest of his shots on the back 9. For handicap purposes he would have the Stableford Adjusted score of 35 points -comfortably within buffer so no 0.1 increase. Not a very likely scenario but possible.

I hope you are never involved in any getting into golf project -

In a period where golf needs membership I reckon this prob not the greatest thread to show people who would like to try the game.

Yes i I agree with these comments.

I remember my first competition when I knew very little about golf I shot over 150 think it was the highest score ever at my club.

Over the years Ive got down to 17, we all got to start somewhere.

He has a HC of 26 so he has already put in scorecards to gain a HC so whilst he maybe new it's not his first round. I didn't start on the range or practise area - got out on the course , thankfully people like you weren't around.

One day I was playing of 18 and suffered badly with all sorts of issues and scored a 122 - anyone would think I was a beginner , should I have not been on the course ?

I have sympathy for the PP's. That can't have been fun for anyone in that group and like it or not that would have put me off my own game and spoilt my enjoyment. Everyone can have a poor round but how many lost balls/provisionals must there have been in that round and how many groups would have to be let through? I have sympathy with the player but if this sort of score is going to be the norm, surely medals aren't for them at the moment. It isn't fair on others

So many assumptions being made from a short op, he may of been in the final group, his pp may of expected a bad round, as others said, it could be someone returning from illness, he may of used 1 ball and lost none.
The guy is off 26 so it's not his first comp.

Good luck and crack on, hopefully whatever reason(s) you had for this round were a one off and you'll get back to playing to handicap.

What a disappointing and selfish attitude you and some other contributors have expressed. As others have said, we all had to start our golfing journey at some point and I would want to treat new golfers in the same way I was treated in the early stages.

I played in a medal yesterday. Myself and one of my PPs managed to register nett 2 and 3 over SSS. The other 2 PPs were 28 handicappers playing in only their 2nd or 3rd comp and their first experience of medal play. Co-incidentally they both managed to score gross 51 over SSS, we got round in 4 hours with no dramas. They both got on with the game and both said they had been dreading playing a medal but had thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were grateful for any encouragement given.
