Phone call received by SIL this week

‘Good afternoon I'm calling from the NHS track and trace service. According to our system, you are likely to have been in close proximity to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. This means that you now need to self-isolate for 7 days and take a COVID-19 test.'
'OK. Can you tell me who that person was?'
'I'm not able to tell you that. That is confidential information.'
'Right. Um... so ....'
'But you do need to be tested within the next 72 hours. So can I just get the best mailing address so that we can send a kit to you?'
'Ok (gives address)'
I just need to take a payment card so that we can finalise this and send the kit to you.'
'Sorry - a payment card? I thought this was all free?'
'No - I'm afraid not. There is a one-off fee of £50 for the kit and test results. Could you read off the long card number for me, please, when you're ready.'
'No - that's not right. This is part of the NHS so there's no charge.'
'I'm afraid there is. Can you give me the card number please - this is very important, and there are penalties for not complying.'
Puts the phone down.

If there is one thing you can rely on it's that scum bag scammers will always be trying it on no matter what is happening in the world . Not sure what the hit rate they get is, if I'm bored I sometimes waste their time as much time as possible by playing dumb and then blasting out some profanity laden music down the phone when the man from Microsoft/BT/OpenReach asks me to open up the event viewer on my PC, which is the usual scam. But I suppose all they need is one hit to make it worth while for them and as you say, it will be the elderly or technically naïve who are more likely to fall for it.

I only get the ones that say they reckon I've had an accident that wasn't my fault. It bloody shouldn't be my fault since I don't even drive.

I always ask them to tell me the details as I think I've suffered some memory loss in the accident.

I was very bored some time ago and received one of these calls. I replied "ah yea, that was the accident where my head came off" the reply "Oh, I need to put you through to my supervisor for that, sir!"

I received an email yesterday saying my TV licence was about to expire. I don't even deal with all that stuff as my wife does all the admin.

"I am calling about your recent accident"

"It wasn't an accident - I meant to kill them".

End of call.
When they say "we've heard you had an accident that wasn't your fault" I say "it was my fault!! I was smacked off my t@#s on coke and whisky at the time and I thought their living room was a parking space"

Hangs up on Me?

I once had time to kill so decided to string one of those callers along for a while.
It was a lady with a very strong foreign accent.
After about 10 minutes the penny finally dropped that I was just wasting her time, and she unleashed a torrent of abuse.
I didn't know ladies knew those words, let alone foreign ladies. What are they teaching them in English classes over there?

When an Indian chap calls and says his name is "Kevin" I reply by saying I am Sachin Tendulkar...

...he replies "that's not right!" and I then say, "you started it!"

I like this...going to try it one day!!

I sometimes try to keep them on the phone to waste their time...its fun to see how long I can keep them on before they realise I'm extracting the urine.

Years ago I had one pushy salesman trying to sell me a conservatory...told him I had no interest but he told me I was making a mistake and the value of my property would be much enhanced by such an addition.

I think I let him rattle on for half an hour before I told him I was convinced and how did I sign up...right now over the phone he said....what is your address he asked.....all I managed to say was "Flat 22..." and he called me a <insert sexual expletive> for wasting his time

I hope I did my village a good turn, I once had the solar panel super salesman on the phone. I was bored that day so strung him along for some while until eventually he asked what sort of property I owned. "A static caravan home" said I, "you what" said he, I explained that not only was it a really nice caravan but it was considered the best one on the travellers camp site. Flustered at this point he asked if all of post code Tn25 *** was a caravan park I confirmed it was - I hope that none of my neighbours wanted solar!

Bad I know, but I did, many years ago, when I got a phone call that was a timewaster/scammer (cant remember exactly) and said "you'll have to excuse me but I've come downstairs to answer the phone as the ringing noise was irritating my father who's on his death bed and may not still be alive when I get back upstairs" that call didnt last long, and anyway I had never seen my father since I was very young,.
